Murray out of Davis Cup squad

By Alistair Hendrie on February 09, 2010, 02:25 PM
Andy Murray's withdrawal from Great Britain's Davis Cup squad has given captain David Lloyd a chance to analyse some untried talent.

Great Britain play Lithuania in Vilnius on March 5-7, where Dan Evans, Jamie Baker and rookie James Ward will compete for the two singles spots.

Without Murray, Great Britain's options are limited. Ward is yet to play in Davis Cup and Evans lost both of his singles rubbers in the last tie against Poland.

Ross Hutchins and established pair Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski will fight for doubles places. "Flemski" ended 2009 with two titles and rankings just outside the top 50. They will be favourites for the doubles rubber.

However, Lloyd's men are in woeful Davis Cup form and have not won a tie since 2007 when they upset Croatia.

Lloyd will announce his final four man squad on 23 February.

Team GB without Murray is like Arsenal without Fabregas.

It's like Arsenal with just Ray Parlour.

Is there a reason why he withdrew?

Is there a reason why he withdrew?

Because we're now down into a really sh*t group and the jet-lag/ travels costs are really really not worth the hassle, and so that some of the younger players can get some backbone and compete for their country!

I think it's the right thing to do, no doubt some if the media will be like wawawa he's anti English etc etc blahblah Hopefully after what John Lloyd said some might lay off him a bit... But then the media aren't exactly nice....
