How many points can Andy defend from now 'till year end?
« on: July 03, 2009, 09:34 PM »
Andy defends a barrowload of points from now till London.
SF in Montreal
W in Cincinnati
RU at the US Open
W in Madrid (will be playing in Shanghai in that week though, I think?)
W in St Petersburg
QF in Paris
That roughly amounts to around 4,000 points, gulp.
A mighty task, indeed.
No doubt he'll be looking for improvements in Paris and Montreal, could see him winning either of those, as Fed and Nadal sometimes miss Paris.
How many can he defend? He's never had a bad hardcourt season (unfair to include 2007 when you consider it was a return from a lengthy hiatus)

I've calculated it all up and he has to defend 5200 points!
Though he does drop his zero pointer from Indianapolis.
I'll calculate how much points he gets if he reaches the same stage of each tournament.

He should be looking at winning 2 of the 4 Masters. Ignoring form at the time, he has to be the favourite for pretty much all of them. It's really important he reaches the US final again, but minimum we can expect is the Semis. He will probably clean up whatever 250s/500s he plays, and of course there's points to be gained at TMC. He will be fine, he should equal/better what points he is defending. The important thing is to not get hung up on them as individual tournaments ie if Andy crashes out in the quarters in Cincinnati for example. He will make up for whatever he loses elsewhere, even if there is an initial dip.

Don't think he'll win both Montreal and Cincy, but he could well make the final of one and win the other, like he did in IW and Miami.
I'm hoping for a US Open win, but I think Fed is going to be hard to get past with his rediscovered confidence.
Reckon he'll get either Shanghai or Paris - more likely Shanghai, I think he'll be tired again by the time Paris comes around.
Apparently he's playing a 500 in Valencia towards the end of the season too - should be looking to win that one, it's indoor hard.
Don't forget Masters Cup points!
What's going on with Rafa? Is he going to be back in time for Montreal? Could have a big say in all this - I think Federer and Nadal are the only people who can truly trouble Andy... perhaps Roddick now too, though I do believe that today was still against the norm

Just to add that he does love American hardcourts more than any other in the world.

If Andy equals his performance last year at all of the tournament he'll defend 4590 of the 5200 points he's to defend.

That's quite a big "if" though. He was really on a roll after Wimbledon last year - perhaps difficult for him to duplicate that.

After this disappointment, I think he'll be fine. He's just too good not to come back strong. I think he needs to get that Slam win soon though, it's the only thing missing now and may start to weigh on his mind the longer he goes without one.

I agree. I worry for him. But I will not stop being a 'fan'. This is why I'm here.

This is exactly what I was trying to tell Andrew earlier but he wouldn't agree with me, I'm so with you Joe
I am not worried about the point defence - the US Open series is when he feels most comfortable so he'll be fine.
As for Rafa, he could well be out for the rest of the season for all we know, it's not something you can fully recover from.

He's done it all now - won multiple Masters, broken British ranking records, got winning H2Hs over most of the top players - but the Slam win is all that's left and what the great and good are judged on. I really hope that we can get one this year or next - otherwise there may be others coming up to overtake him!

Right... so if Andy reaches the semis of each of the remaining mandatory tournaments and wins the Valencia 500 he'll defend 2660 points.

No, you said he has to win one this year, which I completely disagree with.
For the record, I do think Andy will win the USO this year.

So, the next Masters is not till 8 August (I think) ....... that seems a long time to wait for another really big tournament.
