Andy's Friends on Tour
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:46 PM »
Just been re-watching the Troicki match and noticed Monaco in the stands, and then there was a picture on here a bit later on showing Andy, Ross and Danny watching the Monaco/Haase match. And it got me thinking - who does Andy really get on with on tour? And who does he not particularly like?
It's a subject I've always wondered about (particularly when the likes of Azarenka and Wozniacki are at his matches!). Thre are the obvious ones like Djokovic, Fleming and Hutchins, etc. But does anyone know who else he gets on with, or doesn't like?
Here's a brief compilation of what I know from his autobiography, interviews and whatnot:
Friends:
Djokovic (juniors)
Nadal (juniors)
Monaco
Wawrinka (hitting partner)
Ferrer
Lopez, F
Nieminen
The Brits:
Hutchins
Fleming
Jamie (obviously)
Baker (grew up together)
WTA:
Wozniacki
Azarenka
Doesn't like:
Soderling (autobiography - doesn't say why)
Haven't included JMDP despite their well-known spat in 2007 as I think they've got over that now.
So go on, help me out there guys. What other tennis pros out there does he really get on with, or is he not so fond of? There's a few I'm unsure of - Berdych and Fish (isn't fond of?).
Might be a few on here that some of you don't know about so we can all help educate each on other on this area!
Apologies if this topic has been brought up before.

I think he gets on with Fish (I'm sure I've read that they're friends off court, and I remember Fish fooling round in the background of one of Andy's interviews last year). On court they did have some bad feeling in their Queens match a couple of years ago but I think they're past that now.
I also think Andy gets on with Andy Roddick - they used to always exchange funny tweets. He seems to practice the most with Ferrer, Lopez and Wawrinka - I remember him calling Wawrinka one of his best friends on the tour a few years back and says that Ferrer is one of the nicest guys in tennis. I think Serena quite likes Andy too.
Federer is the one that stands out as someone Andy doesn't get on with after putting Andy down frequently even when he was just starting out on the tour. They clearly respect each other now but definitely wouldn't call them friends (same with Djokovic-Federer).

Federer doesn't really mix with the other guys, though does he? Probably because, from very early on, Mirka was superglued onto his arm. I remember he didn't stay at the Olympic village last time.

That's true - he does like to keep his distance from everyone. I guess he must prefer it that way, and doesn't like to socialise with his competitors. He does seem to get on well with Rafa and Wawrinka though.

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

He and Kuznetsova used to hang around each other's matches. They were pals from tennis academy days in Spain.

Didn't know about Kuznetsova.
Thanks for the info guys. Don't know why but it's always really interested me who Andy does get on with on tour. Bit like with football teams, you wonder who's closest to who, etc.

No deposit, no return on what was given to me at birth... (altho I was actually born with dark wavy hair, then it changed when I was about 1 yr old.)
So... you a pal of Andrew then?

Can't think of any others who he seems obviously friends with. He had quite a few spats with the other Andy in the early days but that's well in the past and he did a charity match for the other Andy more recently.
Don't think he gets on well with Berdych - but does anybody? And I think the only reason he doesn't get on well with Fed has been Fed's attitude towards him because when he first played Fed he was incredibly respectful towards him. Overall I get the sense that Andy is well liked and gets on with most people.

I wonder about Haas, after he made those snarky remarks? (even though he apologized/clarified afterwards).
And then Davydenko: I think Andy showed him who's the boss at Wimbledon, but Davy seemed to have some sort of problem with Andy, apparently, and the handshake wasn't warm.
