In America, tennis was rarely shown unless it was a grand slam.  And most matches were shown tape delayed.  If you wanted to know how a player you were a fan of was doing, you would have to sit at your computer on the (slow) live up-date.

We now have the tennis channel which gives you tennis and various tennis shows 24/7.  They also show Davis Cup, not sure if all they show is the US team.  I hope they will show other Davis Cup matches as well.

The LTA did us proud with their free streaming but I was disappointed that the BBC did their usual tennis shutdown immediately after Wimbledon.  Just imagine if Match of the Day was shown for just two weeks a year!  Every summer Sue Barker and the usual culprits chunter away about the state of British tennis and the lack of youth coming through.  The BBC needs to respect the sport of tennis and get real. It is a global sport played all year round, not a quaint British tradition providing a mutual admiration society for the establishment both in and out of tennis.

The sports editor puts all his eggs into the Wimbledon basket and then shuts up shop until going into overdrive a whole year later.  The casual viewer is given no idea or perspective of what goes on in the world of tennis between Wimbledon tournaments.   Andy and the other top players appear as if by magic, their ranking established in the eleven months or so since the BBC last showed a match.

Andy was fantastic in Glasgow and the BBC should be ashamed of missing this great moment in sport.   As ever with Andy it was about a lot more than tennis.  He played his heart out and showed what a truly lovely guy he is.  The atmosphere was electric.  The result was important.   The BBC need to do better.  Their failure to cover this magnificent event undermines the brilliance of their Wimbledon coverage.

Not at all surprised about the lack of coverage of the DC. The event was held in Scotland that should be enough to eplain why the BBC did not cover it.  After all there was no mention of it on the main BBC news at 6pm or 10pm.  As I have said before we only got the result on Reporting Scotland.

Wow, i didn't know that.  It's an eye opener for me. I always moan when some of the tournaments not shown in my country. I can say i'm pretty lucky cause they show all the masters series and grand slams.

I wouldn't mind getting the tennis channel here as well, we've got plenty of football channels so why not, I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for it.

The Tennis Channel is really growing.  When it first began, you had to buy the channel to get tennis and it wasn't available in many areas, but now it is part of sports channels packages.  I bet they are working on getting into different countries and becoming international.  It would be a great boom for them as well as wonderful for all the tennis fans in other countries.

I just saw something that may let me watch tennis whereever it is broadcast and one of the reviews came from someone in the UK.  Here is the URL for anyone who may want to watch Andy play in the US and other areas during the hardcourt season.
http://www.satellitedirect.com/sports/index.html?hop=taxi191&xsite=sp

BTW does anyone know Andy's schedule prior to the US Open??

Playing Rogers Cup in Montreal w/c 08/08/2011, then in Cincinnati 14/08/2011.

Thanks for direction towards satellite direct. Very interesting. However, Sky would probably cover most Masters events worldwide. Useful to know, particularly in cases where Sky does not show.

Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

I agree that it was a disgrace on the part of the BBC, especially as they're only too happy to show golf, cricket, F1 and snooker throughout the year, although they did show the FO on the Red Button, so I don't see why they couldn't have shown this tie on that as well, given that so many people now have digital TV, particularlly as Andy was playing.  The fact that GB is nearly in the DC outer darkness should have had no bearing on that.

If anyone should care to go back to the posts I have been submitting for some time, you will discover  that I have been consistently "desk thumping" the negative attitude of BBC towards tennis. In particular to almost come to a reporting halt after Queens and Wimbledon. So the poor reporting of DC should come to no surprise to any member of MW.

The beeb have shown it in previous years, so I wonder what's changed. Think  Have Eurosport got the rights now?

There was no mention of the NZ Davis Cup team on the news here - they are in Group 1 I believe - in fact, over that particular weekend, I think the sports coverage compiled of rugby (union - Crusaders vs Reds in some final or other), netball (vs England in the semis and Australia in the final) and rowing - world championships in Lucerne.  They don't often cover many sports beyond these and you all know what my tennis coverage is like fainting

Yes Bev, I wondered whether the Beeb had lost the rights to show DC, as I too have watched it with them in previous years! I was really disgusted it never even got a mention on the news here, as it is TEAM GREAT BRITAIN after all! Golf, athletics and F1 all got a mention!
