The important thing people should remember is that with rankings it makes absolutely no difference what surface, and where tournaments are, and no difference how you did in that particular tournament last year. All that matters is the date. If Madrid would be played 5 times one year, all 5 times would count towards the ranking. Basically, the easiest way to look at it is to forget about how he did in this tourney last year, but to look at what he did this
week
last year.
So, when it comes to Hamburg later in the year, it's really quite simple how it'll work.
I haven't explained that very well!

It's easy. Points have a 52 week expiry date. Doesn't matter what even is being played, just what week it is. Just so happens most events tend to be the same week so it feels like they defend points at events. However, cause of the calendar changes and the olympics last year it won't always work that way.

Does a mod person want to add 2009 on the end of the thread topic?

Oh Neil .... was just looking at your list and see Nadal at the top .... I thought there was some question as to whether he was actually going to play Madrid? Did you hear all that gossip?

He was always going to play it, he was just concerned about the altitude and how it might affect him. I think it's roughly 500m higher than Rome.

I did hear about the altitude concerns, but I had thought he wasn't going to play and that there was a little controversy going on. What a schedule!

The draw for Madrid is out!
http://www.atpworldtour.com/1/posting/2009/1536/mds.pdf
Likely route for Andy below:
R1 - bye
R2 - Bolleli (or qualifier)
R3 - Robredo (or Kiefer / Tipsarevic / Fish)
QF - Del Potro (or Wawrinka)
SF - Federer (or Davydenko / Roddick / Blake)
F - Nadal (or Djokovic....very unlikely!)

Aside from the fact that he is not in Nadal's half this time, that's a really bad draw.

I am a little worried about Robredo and Wawrinka but hope he has his Spanish winners speech ready.

It's not going to be easy, that's for sure.
But, it'll be interesting to see how he does, nonetheless.

I think Andy will be fine until the final. On his website, Andy is seen working hard to build up his fitness and endurance. Andy's tennis has been great this year so I can't really see anyone beating Andy until he meets Nadal and then we could be in for a nice surprise
.

Hmmm..... I wish I shared your optimism. Not that I don't want to, but I'm just not too sure about his belief in himself on clay just yet (it is on clay?)
