Well, he has to play somebody - explain to me why it is so bad. I appreciate that if he gets to the semi's it will be Rafa and then Fed or Novak but wasn't that a likely outcome anyway? I'm not expert enough to judge - although I know that both Gasquet and Nalbandian could be dangerous.

He's still only beaten Fed/ Rafa back to back in Dubai friendly. Also FatDave will be no pushover and Nando will fancy a bit more of Muzza. Still as long as he does better than Nole nervous

Andy H2H against likely opposition

Gicquel - Andy 1-0 (retired at 3-0 down in third set)
Monaco - ranked 59 - never met
Fish - Andy 2-1 up - last met in 2006 (twice) where AM won in 2 sets.
Gasquet - Andy 1-2 (remember Wimbledon!) could be tricky!
Nalbandian - Andy 0-2 - last met in 2008, lost in two sets in Paris
Gonzo - Andy 1-1 - last met in 2006 over 5 sets in US open
Verdasco - Andy 5-1 - last met Aussie Open which was AM's only loss
Del Potro - Andy 2-0 - last met in US open 2008 (I was at the match!)

Nadal and Feb we know about.

All in all, first couple of rounds should be straightforward - Gasquet/Bandy will be the tricky one.  If he gets past here, Gonzo should be no problem and Andy will want to avenge the Aussie open match against Verdasco.

Then is Nadal and Fed - easy matches Whistle

Nalbandian is a tough customer, he really outclassed Andy in Paris, when he's on form, he's unbeatable, hopefully he'll have an off day, if he even gets there.

Verdasco is also playing phenomenally well.

I agree, no MS draw is a cakewalk, but compare this to :

R4 - Robredo
QF - Ljubicic.

Thanks very much, I had forgotten about Verdasco too. I know he needs to progress into the tourney to gain points to catch Nole but nevertheless, the more he plays these top flighters, some of whom are on very good form at the moment, the more experience he gains and with it the confidence. Indian Wells and Rotterdam seemed easy runs indeed. Nevertheless he's going to have to beat them all time and time again if he is ever to be No.1.

I've got a sneaking suspicious that Tsonga might make the final here. He's in good form, has a good draw, Nole's off-colour and I don't think Federer takes these tournaments too seriously these days.

...now that I've said that, watch him lose his first match.  Smile
