The way Andy is talking about his focus being to peak at the USopen ...dont expect much more effort from Andy than we saw at Montreal. Hi focus is to work some aspects of his play and avoid injury. Thats about it I reckon. He might win 1 or 2 rounds.

The timing of cincy is stupid. No top player wants to run the risk or injury or peaking too early going into the USopen.

If he does get past this match though, it turns relatively easier from then on with possibly Baghdatis/Benneteau/Fogninin/Stepanek after, then 1/4 finals only seeded players being Berdych or Wawrinka, all the others are mugs then Nadal/Federer in the semis if they make it.

Andy does not wan't to make Gulbis ego even bigger. If they draw to meet in the US open and Andy lost the match in Cincy it would give Gulbis a huge confidence boost beating Andy Murray twice in a row. We do not need that.

Andy will play Gulbis or Youzhny in the 2nd round.      Just great  Rolling Eyes
Couldn't believe it when I saw the draw.  Strange forces are at work here!

Assuming Gulbis beats Youzhny (and their H2H is 2-2, discounting a Youzhny retirement), Andy should be prepared for him this time, his doubles matches having hopefully shaken off the rust.

Re the timing of Cincy, there is a week's break before the USO, which is the same as that between the Rome Masters and the FO, so I don't see where the scheduling problem is.

It could be far worse, he could have Jerzy, Milos, and other giant  servers. He will be better prepared to face and beat Gulbis and after that there is no guarantee that he will face Birdy in the quarters. If it is he can beat him and or Stan who on hard courts he has a very good record.
Andy after doing so well in the doubles will have had plenty of match practice and will not be rusty. He will have honed his net skills, quick reflexes and passing shots,
