Yes, happy birthday Richie. Sorry it's late. I keep forgetting about the birthday thread.

Hummm... interesting!

Sometimes when you're young, you make some bad decisions - that wasn't one of my better ones. I wish I hadn't done it.

As you get older, you learn that money is not the most important thing. I like to make decisions based on what's best for my tennis, best for my career, best for me and the people that are around me.

I know it was published last year but I got it as an Xmas present and have just read the first chapter.  Andy is as honest as ever and I have found out one or two things I didn't know.  He is very graphic in his description of his first Wimbledon as a professional player and even though I watched all his matches I had no idea of the intensity of his humility and naivete going into such a massive tournament.

He described himself as a nobody and found himself in the main locker room with the stars.  He felt out of place because no one knew who he was and he felt them staring at him and thinking 'What are you doing here?'  He wondered if they thought he was a stray ball boy.  He was a little amazed to be in the locker room which was old-fashioned but unbelievably clean.  It wasn't long ago that he'd been playing junior tournaments where 'the kids don't care where they pee and everything stinks'.

He gives detailed accounts of his three matches, beating Bastl and Stepanek before succumbing to the experience of Nalbandian in the third round.  The press conferences weren't easy and Andy found himself being asked all sorts of questions not just about tennis.  He'd gone out with a German girl in Spain but it was over.  It didn't stop two journalists and a photographer flying to Spain and offering her money.  (She took the money but didn't say anything bad.)

A thoroughly enjoyable first chapter, what comes across is how unprepared Andy truly was when he arrived on the scene.  Far from arrogant and cocky, the 17 year old was naive, nervous and overwhelmed by his surroundings and wasn't made to feel welcome by some of the top players.   I'll be reading more later in the week and will keep you lucky people up to scratch with anything I feel is noteworthy.   thumb up

Is this 'Hitting Back' under a different name or a completely different book?

As far as I know the contents of the book are the same but with an added chapter at the end. Also it has a different front cover and it's a paperback whereas 'Hitting Back' was a hardback.

I think 'Coming of Age' is a more appropriate title though.

Despite all the claims of him being too young etc etc I did really enjoy the book, I was actually moved to tears by the things Judy said about the Dunblane shooting incident...

I'm not sure whether to get Coming of Age.... Is it worth it?

Ah right. Would still like to read it anyway though tbh.... If you want me I'll be in Waterstones, hidden on one of the beanbags in the kids section secretly reading it.....

At the end of the day, he shouldn't be releasing a book until he hangs up his racquet.

Pah I disagree, what harm has it done? He wanted to do it and it put his mind somewhat at ease..

Not necessarily any harm - I personally think autobiographies should be released at the twilight years of an individuals life.
