Andy Murray set to be given the Freedom of Stirling!
« on: October 18, 2012, 09:07 PM »
TENNIS champ Andy Murray is to be given the Freedom of Stirling after councillors unanimously agreed the move.
Murray’s home town of Dunblane, where he delighted thousands of fans with a homecoming parade last month, is now in the local government area of Stirling.
Dunblane councillor Graham Houston called on Stirling Council to grant the accolade.
Olympic and US Open champion Murray will become only the third person to receive the honour since Stirling was granted city status in 2002.
War veteran Lieutenant Colonel Frank Saunders and the late cricketing legend Irwin Iffla are the others.
Houston told council members: “Andy has been tremendous for the country and he is a great example to our youth.”
Yesterday, Stirling Provost Mike Robbins said Murray would now be invited to attend a special council meeting, where he would formally become a Freeman of the city.

A prestigious award indeed. Only the third man to receive it proves that it is indeed a rarity and a grand achievement.
