No, because Andy isn't an aggressive player.
What I meant was that I thought he liked fast surfaces, which is why he's never been all that great on clay?

He should practice on proper clay.

He can still work on sliding, serving and general shot making - then transfer it to the European clay next week.

Surely he'll get enough time to practise on red clay (which isn't really clay either but crushed bricks) when he goes to Valencia?  He's just changing from one type of so-called clay surface to another.

Also I thought there were differences in hard-court surfaces as well, so I don't see why he should have any problem adapting easily to this.

Also worth remembering that with Davis Cup duties he's racked up a bit more clay time than other years.

Good point dani, and both ties were played on red clay as well.

I don't get his plans at all. He says he needs to play more on clay yet skips a  masters that he could have gained points at? His scheduling this year has been questionable to say the least.

I don't see anything wrong with his scheduling this year so far, and the reason he wanted to skip MC was (a) that he felt it was too much for his body to cope with right now, coming as it has on top of the DC tie, and (b) so that he could do some of the more rigorous fitness training he was unable to do in Miami last year and so get himself back to full fitness, which seems reasonable enough to me, because until he does that he's going to continue losing matches, and if he keeps on losing matches he won't get his confidence back, so I don't think there wasn't much sense anyway in playing MC, where he had few points to defend, in the off-chance of maybe gaining a few more.

I did hope that he might play the Portugal Open though as a warm-up to Madrid because going into a Masters cold doesn't seem a good idea to me, but it's his choice and his career, so we have to respect that.
