AO 2010 - how will Andy do? « on: November 27, 2009, 08:54 PM »

So, there's no meaningful tennis action until this years Australian open, so I'm going to attempt to keep some sort of tennis conversation going until then (I may get bored, of course). Murray looks likely to be 5th in the world and therefore will be seeded 5th. If this is the case, he is likely to meet one of Federer, Nadal, Del Potro or Djokovic in the quarter final.

So what do you say? Will he fix his game and roar to victory, or limp out early again?

I like to see the draw first.

Andy has never made it past R4, things have got to change.

Personally, I think Andy will NEVER win the AO. I just think the conditions are so tough, it's very difficult for someone born in this country to habituate, but I'm no conditioning coach, so what do I know?

As a surface, it's quite a slow hard court, which usually favours defensive players, but for some reason, Andy plays better the quicker the surface.

I think Andy should be looking to reach the SFs here. It's time he matched his seeding here, though I do realise he'll probably be seeded #5 here! Frown

If he gets one of the top four in the QFs, then let it be Nadal or Djokovic, I think he's capable of beating both.

My prediction - QF/SF.

I agree - he should be aiming for the semis at least. Out of the top four he's probably a very slight favorite to beat Djokovic or Nadal and 50/50 with Del Potro. Federer seems to have his number at the moment, so he'd be the heavy favorite in that case.

I don't see why he should have any particular difficulty in getting acclimatised to conditions at the AO. Djokovic, who appears to have a constitution scarily similar to melting ice-cream, managed to win there... and Murray does spend a lot of time training in Miami, which has a similar climate.

Obviously he should be looking to reach the semis at least. He should be looking to win it, though. I don't think it's a bad surface for him at all. He's had bad luck. In 2007 he got Nadal and he played a blinder, but mental lapses cost him. In 2008 Tsonga took him and everyone else by surprise. In 2009 he got Verdasco playing the tennis of his life and came down with a virus that the doctors suspected might be mono.

He really has been unlucky at a lot of slams. I think it's an excellent surface for him and he's fit enough to win it.

He'll get to the final with a rotten draw and he'll face a first time finalist currently ranked outside the top 32 who he'll lose against. Been far too long since a true one slam wonder turned up and knowing Murray's luck he'll be the one on the wrong side.

This is normally Federer's strangest Slam in terms of performance so if he's beatable at Slam level anywhere it'll be here, everyone else Murray should be able to deal with on any hard court and in terms of condition suitability the only person I'd favour over Murray would be Nadal.

I'll be intrigued to see whether Murray's different pre-season next year leads to success. I think the more time spent getting to grips with the sweltering heat and humidity in Australia, the better.

I'd say this is a much better strategy than playing in cool conditions over in the Middle East (in January)

This is a rare chance early on to gain plenty of points. After this, he's got a helluva lot to defend, Rotterdam, Indian Wells final, and Miami.

QF with some luck. Verdasco and Nadal have discussed the difficult conditions at the AO and they're born and bread in the heat, I don't think Andy can manage for more than 4/5 consecutive matches.

Too much loafing around, and you're toast. Hope Andy can find a slice of luck upon the way.
