AO 2013 R1: Murray [3] vs Haase

Reply

In the first round of Andy's campaign in Melbourne he will face Robin Haase of the Netherlands. This is his first Slam match since winning his maiden Slam in New York last September. A time has not yet been confirmed as to when this match will be played.

Well, there's been easier R1s.

Haase has been dire for a while now. Lost 11 of his last 13 matches since defending his Kitzbuhel crown back in July. Or another way of looking at it is that he's only won twice in the last 6 months. They were against an out-of-form Davydenko in August and world #217 Bhambri last week.

Last few tournaments:

Chennai - R2 (Bedene WR86)
Basel - R1 (Gasquet WR13)
Vienna - R1 (Matosevic WR55)
Tokyo - R1 (Troicki WR32)
Bangkok - R1 (Moriya WR204)

Davis Cup - L Wawrinka (WR17)
Davis Cup - L Federer (WR2)

US Open - R1 (Lopez WR31)
Winston Salem - R2 (Nalbandian WR45)
Cincinnati - R1 (Seppi WR27)
Olympics - R1 (Gasquet WR20)

This is as dangerous as it gets for the first round. He's world number 54 and remember that amazing match at Flushing Meadows 2 years ago.

Posted these on the AO thread, will post them here too.

Potential opponents en route to the semis (of course there will be the odd shock player)

Djokovic: Mathieu - Harrison/Giraldo - Stepanek - Wawrinka/Querrey - Berdych - Ferrer
Federer: Paire - Davydenko - Tomic/Klizan - Raonic - Tsonga - Murray
Murray: Haase - Sousa/Smith (WC) - Mayer - Simon/Dolgopolov/Monfils - Del Potro/Cilic - Federer

Murray's moved forwards whilst Haase has declined.

I love how the tabloids are already pronouncing it a tough R1 draw, based solely on one match 17 months again where Haase played out of his skin.

Murray will win with ease.

Haase is one of those annoying players who ramps it up for the big occassion plays 10x better than normal. If Andy starts nervous i can see a 4 setter here.

Andy should get it done in straights (or in 4 at worst), he's moved on as a player since USO '11.

Couldn't agree more. Thanks for the info about Haase's recent form too. I didn't think he had done much. Nice to see it confirmed.

Forgot to say as well, she says, sounding like ruddy Rusedski, Haase might have pushed Andy 17 months ago, but Andy did win. Andy is stronger now, starts much better on the whole. I see a four setter at most, but most likely straights to Andy.

Looks like Fed has a tough draw for once, Tomic or Klizan could be tricky, then Raonic and Tsonga and last but not least Andy if he makes it, would love a Fed vs Andy semi and let's hope he can lay the Fed in 5 sets in a slam ghost to rest finally

The highlighted ones are each top player's most potential threats until the semi.

I will upload the US Open 2011 Match v Haase to the Youtube channel this weekend for a reminder of how godawful Andy played.

Haase caught Andy once off guard. It's unlikely to happen again. It's not the same when you already know what's in the past. Haase couldn't pull the upset back then. Why should he now especially when he's even more on the downside.

Err ... do we need to be reminded of that particular nightmare? #justsayin'

Agreed, but I still don't take anything for granted.  True, his recent form leaves a lot to be desired, but players like him can unexpectedly play out of their skin because they have nothing to lose.  Andy will almost certainly be nervous for this match - most of the top players are in R1 of Slams, for obvious reasons.  Andy should win but I'm prepared for a four-setter, with Andy losing either the 1st or 2nd set.
