AO 2013 R3: Murray [3] vs Berankis
« on: January 17, 2013, 04:53 AM »
After a couple of comfortable wins Murray now faces a tougher test in the form of 22 year old Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, who secured an emphatic straight sets win over 25th seed Florian Mayer in R2, having never lost a match this year. The two have never met, but, according to Murray, they have frequently practised together.
Berankis's profile
- He started playing tennis aged two...Nickname is “Rycka” in his homeland…Speaks Lithuanian, Russian and English…Father, Genadijus, is a taxi driver; and mother, Jelena, works in a post office...one sister, Lina, a former tennis player...Hobbies include spear fishing, playing pool, watching movies and listening to music...Former junior World No. 1 in 2007, when he captured US Open junior title and the Orange Bowl...Trains at IMG Bollettieri Academy in Florida…Coached by Remigijus Balzekas since he was nine years old.

His current ranking is 110 but he reached a career high of 73 in January 2011, becoming the first Lithuanian player to break into the top 100. He has also played in Lithuania's Davis Cup team. Unfortunately he missed parts of 2010 and 2011 due to injury, and in 2012 underwent groin surgery.

Had to watch Andy v Sousa on computer. Thank goodness for Eurosport. Oz tv insist on only showing Aussies. Shame Bbc do no have the same support for homegrown Why is Andy playing again In the heat of the day? The scheduling is pro Fedface. Did think Ivan would have a little clout. Andy looked good but bored. He needs some good opposition soon

I hope the schedulers give him an evening slot for this match, either that or the weather gets cooler. 37C is punishing!

Temperature down in low 20's on Saturday with possibility of a shower. Later schedule would suit Andy as he is not a morning person and his next opponent is a little tricky

I think Fed/Tomic will be the evening match (should Fed get through Davy which looks likely). Hope the temperatures do reduce - it must take so much out of them having to play in such extreme heat.

They won't since Fed/Tomic is the bigger draw. But it's supposed to cool down a bit.
BTW has someone seen the Monfils match?

I read that Berankis means armless in Lithuanian. Is this true, I wonder? Just as well its not Armstrong, then!

sounds like Andy knows Berankis very well as they often practise together and sounds like he really likes him. That won't stop him being ruthless on court though of course.
given Ferrer has a night match tomorrow it would only be fair to give Andy one too as otherwise he'll be the only one of top 4 not to have had one but if they do, it would be on Hisense I guess as of course Tomic/smugfed will be on RLE. But they might wait and give Andy a night match Monday assuming he gets through as then he'd be playing Simon or Monfils so a bigger match. And if it's cooler Saturday Andy might prefer a day match anyway so it's done and dusted. And he doesn't like too cool and it can get very cool in the evening in Melbourne.

I don't want to be picky Aileen, but you wouldn't mind putting the (3) after Murray would you?

No worries. If Berankis gives Andy any hard time, we will put the jinx blame on Aileen.
And if anyone wants to see our latest victim, here he is:

Good thing Andy practices is Miami, Florida where it is humid and very hot in the summer, should definitely help him in the Aussie heat seeing as they seem to like to schedule him to play in the heat of the day.
