Progressing to the fourth round for Andy has been easy, having not dropped a set and being broken only a handful of times. Well it gets easier in the fourth round as Andy will face off against Stephane Robert of France, who is in this event as a lucky loser. These two have never played before, so it will take Andy time to adjust to Robert's game, added to that since losing in qualies, Robert has shown some incredible form, dismissing Martin Klizan (another lucky loser) in the last round in three straight sets.

Robert is ranked 119 in the world and has reached one ATP level final in the past, in Johannesburg 2010, where he lost to Feliciano Lopez, who Andy beat in the previous round. Robert beat Berdych at the French Open in 2011, which rose him to fame in five sets, so he is no stranger to playing the big guys.

The winner of this match will face Roger Federer or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarters in a highly anticipated clash.

Just reading Robert's interview from yesterday - having lost in qualifiers to Michael Berrer, he was hanging around in the hopes of maybe replacing Giles Simon who was on crutches. He was filling in some paperwork for the ATP when he got the call, went to see the referee and was told  "Okay, you're ready to play?  Court 7.  Go.  I see, I see my opponent, say, Okay, see you on court.  And we went and played (Laughter.)"

He replaced Kohlschreiber who was seeded, so hasn't had to face a seed before now.

He's got the opponent he wanted......

Q.  And you might play Andy Murray in the next round.  How would you feel about that?
STEPHANE ROBERT:  Yes, I don't know.  He's still playing now.  He's playing against Lopez.  We'll see, eh?  Hopefully I prefer against Andy Murray, because Feliciano Lopez, I don't like so much his game (Laughter.)
Yeah, maybe Andy is better, but is tough to play against Lopez.  I play him one time in final in Johannesburg, and is difficult to play against this guy.  He has tough game for me.

Q.  So you prefer to play Andy Murray?
STEPHANE ROBERT:  Yeah.

James Ward beat Robert 6-2 6-2 in Q1 in Brisbane this year - but Robert has obviously had a lot more practice since then.

Can't see this being much of a match tba, but you never know.  The guys a lucky qualifier, Andy's cranked up for the last eight, and of course he's French, and I've lost count of the French scalps Andy's taken over the years. ( apologies to Libany if she's around!)

It is tempting to presume it will be easy, but he is ranked 119, which is is only a few places lower than Soeda, but unlike Soeda, he's on a hot streak.

Then again, he didn't play anyone particularly impressive on the way to the 4th round, and he won't be used to playing successive Best of Five matches, so there is a chance he might disintegrate.   I want Andy to win without wasting too much energy, but I'd want him to put up a bit of a fight for his sake as much as Andy's.

It is a worry that he might relax a little too much. I want to see how he does against Federer so am keeping everything crossed. That match would be a big test of tennis minds? Not certain who would win with Andy having so little match practice.

One good thing with how this draw has unfolded is that if he does make the quarters Andy also has a chance to make progress with his ranking.

If we assume that Andy, Ferrer & Berdych all make the quarters then there are still possibilities for AM to get ahead of Ferrar and stay ahead of Berdych. If neither of the latter two then get to the final he will definitely stay ahead of Berdych. If Berdych though beats Ferrer and Andy had progressed to the semi he will end up ranked 4 at minimum above them both. Of course if B&F neither win their R16 matches then he is even better placed?

If, as a bonus, he progressed to the final that would assure him of being ranked 3 again if neither of those other two did! He would overtake Delpo again as his points are now fixed. I think that I am right. I love to look at options. Whatever happens it all will stay quite tight so he can progress his points total at subsequent tournaments?

Did someone say that he could not count any points gained at Acapulco? Why not? If he scores more than the 20 points from Doha surely it replaces that? I think he has to keep the three no scores in 500 events. The rule that leaves him with three zeros is in my opinion wrong as he was injured and had to withdraw rather than just did not turn up? I am looking forward to the time when he can score in three other 500 events when the no score ones are removed later in the year! The end of 2014 should be very important to his end of year ranking an O2 qualification?

Is there a result poll for round 4 set up?

Andy may not have played Robert before on the tour but in his BBC interview he says he has known him for a long time.  Robert is quoted as saying he takes a kind of shut my eyes and go all out and hope for the best attitude so there could be a high number of both winners and ues from him.

Andy never takes any player for granted, and players like Robert have nothing to lose so often play above their ranking although few can sustain it for more than a couple of sets.  Also at 33 he isn't lacking in experience, and so could be a bit of a wily old dog.  The fact that he's the first LL to get to R4 in Oz, will have boosted his confidence, but Andy's confidence too should be fairly high, given that he had no idea how he would perform here, and Lopez was a tricky opponent, plus we now know that against Millot his mind was distracted by Jamie's illness until he was finally galvanised into action.  I think Andy will win but I also have feeling that it could be quite an entertaining match.

Interesting little snippets about Stephane from an article in The Independent -

There are not many professional tennis players whose name would feature alongside the words “backpacker”, “youth hostel”, “casino”, “Dostoyevsky” and “sophrology” in the same paragraph, but then again there are not many individuals like Stéphane Robert. The 33-year-old Frenchman, who stands between Andy Murray and a place in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, is one of the game’s characters.

In addition to his love of travel and gambling, Stephane is also

An avid reader who likes Russian authors (“Dostoyevsky, Nabokov, Tolstoy”) and Le Monde, Robert practises sophrology which, according to the Sophrology Academy, is “the science of the consciousness in harmony” and “a life-balancing technique made of very practical physical and mental exercises aiming at an alert mind in a relaxed body”.  Asked what sophrology he had used before his victory yesterday, Robert said: “In the morning I did yoga breathing. I do that to try to find inner calm. I did that at the hotel and on the court. It helps my concentration. On the court I try to make myself aware of everything. For example, I bounce the ball on my racket for a minute so that I can concentrate on the noise.”
