Firstly.. Andy no longer has a back problem. He looks extremely fit.
imo several aspects of his game looked better than even when he won Wimbledon.... 1st and second serve looked better...he can now generate more power on both his backhand and forehand. Some of his forehands looked as big as anything ive seen from Nadal. I think he can now rotate his back such that he can generate the power he has not been able to.

Soeda didnt play great but he wasnt terrible either he hit many good shots. The 1st 2 sets from Andy were as good if not better than anything thus far at the oz open.

Anyway...Like someone else said... Andy could be approaching a level we havent seen yet. If not this slam..then this year. Its only the 1st round of course ... but for me .. ive seen enough to believe this year Andy will be even better than he ever has been....even on clay.

I said that lol. If andy is playing without a back injury where he was before then, like Nadal, he could start playing better than he ever has.

The fact that it's quite easy up until the QF. He'll most likely go into the match vs Fed/Verdasco/Tsonga with 0 TESTS!

Pretty impressive on the whole.  Wobbled a bit in the third though.  Maybe it was the heat, or maybe his stamina isn't quite there yet.  Served very well.  12 aces.

He was hardly wobbly in the 3rd, he won it 6-3 with 2 breaks and didn't face a BP. It was pretty good in the 3rd still imo and only looked worse in comparison to the first 2 sets which were outstanding. The break in the final game was amazing as well.

Not a problem he has bags of experience he can draw on if it gets tough in the QFs, I think its more important he is fresh if he gets there.

Watched the first two sets. Very different Murray today, than in his practice matches. You could see he was out to get the job done as quickly and ruthlessly as possible. It was delightful to see him playing pain free. Once I saw his state of mind, I didn't worry about this match at all. Most unusual for me who panics and hides behind the sofa until its all over regardless of who he is playing. I love it when he is in those "take no mercy" moods and seems to regard it as a personal affront if his opponent gets a point.

I don't think Murray's level dropped in the third, more that his opponent had nothing to lose and so probably relaxed a bit.

He might well run out of puff later in this tournament, but the march back to full fitness is well in hand.

Great way to ease into things. Very impressive in the first 2 sets and was able to hold off any fight Soeda tried to give in the 3rd. Great to get off the court quickly in that heat too.

Really good performance from Andy - and just the kind of quick match he'd want in the extreme heat.

Soeda didn't play very well and Andy will obviously be tested a lot more in the later rounds, but it's an excellent start.
