While he is attempting to win his first Grand Slam trophy without the aid of a coach, he is not short of helpers and advisers. Darren Cahill, former coach to Andre Agassi, has ruled himself out the running for the position of Murray’s full-time mentor but he is more than willing to work with him on an occasional or part-time basis.

“It all depends on what Andy is looking for to move forward,” he said. “He’s a good guy and extremely well-liked on tour. He has always been welcome to tap into our services at any time.”

“I’m a big believer in Andy winning multiple major titles,” said Cahill. “There’s no rush or time line attached to it as I see him as a guy who is constantly looking to figure stuff out himself. Some people might call it stubbornness. But I see it more as Andy wanting to become a better student of the game. He needs to feel it before he really believes it.

“He may even evolve into a late Grand Slam winner but when he does, I think the gates will open up. He’s still evolving as a player with a great deal of upside to come. But there’s no reason he can’t make that big breakthrough in a couple of weeks’ time.”

Scotland’s finest has always said that he will hit his peak around this stage in his career, when he is 23. Cahill, though, is willing to give Murray a little more leeway and, consequently, more opportunities to win.

He already believes Murray is one of the best in the business but, with a little more time – and possibly his help – Cahill feels there is much more to come. “Andy is the type of old school feel player who will probably play his best tennis when he’s 26 or 27,” said Cahill. “His serve will get better, especially developing a heavier, more aggressive second serve.

“His sense for taking away an opponent’s time will improve. His forehand is evolving as a weapon. He’ll be more aggressive and committed to moving to the net. He is improving and will continue to do so.”

Interesting that Maclagan said recently that Andy still had some way to go to reach his peak, but will Andy accept Cahill's offer?

Thanks Aileen for the excellent article.  If Andy is capable of beating the top 2 on hard court with his present ability, what else can he achieve when he learns to extract the best of himself in the next 12 months !

OK, thanks.  Still find these boards a bit confusing.Smile

Cahill makes a whole lot of sense to me.  Nobody can tell Andy what to do but I think he'd be a bit unwise to ignore this offer of help, especially as Cahill, who has other commitments, is apparently interested enough to make himself available on a part-time basis.

Thanks for this Aileen - very encouraging.  Not bad when both Cahill and J Mac have expressed interest in advising Andy.  Just hope Andy will take one of them up on it.
