CRACKED IT.... « on: February 25, 2006, 06:51 PM »

After three hours of brain racking and net surfing yesterday, I finally managed to work out how ATP Entry Ranking works! I am very happy as I started following tennis only this June. If there anyone who does not understand ratings this may help:
1. A persons ranking is determined on the basis of his performance for the past twelve months. For example Andy Murray’s ranking on 27th February 2006 is based on his performance from 21st February 2005 to 26th February 2006.
2. In this term 18 tournaments are considered for ranking which must include the four Grand Slams, the nine Masters. Also the best five other (Tour/Challenger/Future/Satellite) tournaments are considered.
3. In the case a person has missed a Slam/Masters event, the next best Tour/Challenger/Future/Satellite tournament is considered.
4. If a person plays the year ending Masters Cup, he will be considered for 19 tournaments instead of 18 tournaments. The Masters Cup is a compulsory event for consideration in case a person has played it.
5. In case a person has not played five Tour/Challenger/Future/Satellite events he will be considered for as many tournaments as available.

Let us consider the week of 20th February 2006 and see an example:

Example: The case of Andy Murray-

As of 13th February these were the points Andy was defending-

Wimbledon 75                US Open 50                  Australian Open 5

Cincinnati Masters 35

Since he has played only 4 of the mandatory 13 events, 14 best Tour/Challenger/Future/Satellite events have to be considered:

Bangkok 120   Basel, Aptos 60 each   Binghamton 50   Mons 21   Queen’s 20       Vancouver 16    Newport, Adelaide, Auckland 15 each       Granby 14     Indianapolis 10             Barletta 7     Zagreb 5

Adding these we get 593 which according to ATP rankings is correct!

In the week of 13th February to 19th February he got 175 points at San Jose and was defending nothing so this is the scenario:

Wimbledon 75                US Open 50                  Australian Open 5

Cincinnati Masters 35

And the best 14 tournaments which is same as above except San Jose enters the best 14 and Zagreb leaves it.

So number of points on 20th February are 593(he already had) – 0 (he was defending) – 5 (he loses from Zagreb as it has become his 19th best result) + 175 (he gains at San Jose)

This amounts to 763 which to ATP rankings is correct!

So after this week Andy will have:

Wimbledon 75                US Open 50                  Australian Open 5

Cincinnati Masters 35

And the best 14 tournaments which is same as above except Memphis enters the best 14 and Barletta leaves it.
So number of points on 27th February will be 763(he already had) – 0 (he was defending) – 7 (he loses from Barletta as it has become his 19th best result) + 60 or so points (he gains at Memphis)

This amounts to around 816!

P.S.  SORRY IF THIS ARTICLE TOO LONG AND THUS IRRITATING. SORRYIF YOU UNDERSTAND RANKINGS MUCH BETTER THAN ME AND DON’T NEED THIS.

Thanks for posting it, I understand it a little better now... But still, when you defend points, for example:
Andy wasn't defending any for San Jose, so he stayed at 175 points. But what if he did have some to defend, what happened to them? Let's say he went to the quaters last year at San Jose, what happens to them?
Sorry if this is a very stupid question #-o

If at first you don't succeed, you fail.

they stay and the new points from winning it get added so theoretically if roger could lose in the quarters of every tournament he plays for the next year he would drop into the top 60

theoretically

I hate that word because it means: never going to happen... Smile And with the Federer one, I would love love love it to happen!
