Dubai SF: Murray vs Djokovic

Quote

Awwwe Philip... you're giving me worries just as Joe got me all pumped up positive!

Ah nothing to worry about.  This is only a measly 500 Series.  Win or lose it matters little in the bigger scheme of things as long as Andy gives a good account of himself. I count these as warm ups for the real thing - the GSs.  As long as Andy continually improves and wins a GS this year, it matters not a jot how many of these he loses to Nole and gains experience from his new style of play.

Nole's obviously the favourite in this one, but I think back to all the times where Federer was expected to beat Andy and that often didn't go to script!

There's no doubt that if Andy plays passively then he'll be beaten quickly. But he always shows different tactics for different opponents and I'm sure he'll be much more aggressive tomorrow and take the match to Novak. In Australia it was him doing a lot of the dictating from set 2 which was great to see. I don't think the match will hit the heights of the Aussie Open one, but hopefully Andy can get another win against Novak here.

I think Andy beating Berdych was huge. I'm hoping he'll beat Djoko tomorrow, but if not, as he says, it's work in progress. I'll be slightly less nervous than today.

Come on Bev, wake up and get cracking with the H2H!

lol  How I wish I was in bed!  Been busy working zz and on my lunch now.

Right, ATP Tour site not working for me atm, so I've improvised and this is the site I used http://www.tennisinsight.com/matchid173214401.htm

Going to be tough for Andy but he needs to believe in himself and remember that he can win this guy. cmonandy

About time he won 7-5 in the third against Djokovic/Nadal.

Andy's thoughts on the match -

"It should be obviously a great challenge," Murray said after his 6-3, 7-5 win over Tomas Berdych yesterday. "Any time you play against the top players, that's the case. I would like to get a chance to play him again. You know, before the Indian Wells, Miami stretch. It would be good to see exactly what I need to work on, where my game is.

"I had a great match with him in Australia and hopefully I'll reverse the result"

Well I would like to see Andy do that but just don't see it happening.  Whilst there's a definite improvement in his post-AO attitude this year compared to the last two, I really don't think his game is quite up there yet, and Andy doesn't sound very convinced either, so I think it's wise of him to see this match as a means of gauging exactly where he's at. He can then go back to Lendl, talk over any concerns, and hopefully get some of the kinks ironed out before the Masters.  Just so long as he gives a good account of himself today, I'll be happy.

I worry, but a lot less these days thankfully, when Andy plays someone who's good but ranked lower eg Berdych, Tsonga etc.
Novak is expected to win this one and I just hope Andy puts up a damn good fight. However, am with Philip on this one, don't think Andy is quite up to speed yet.  Nor is Novak, but he seems able to raise his game when necessary. Confidence I suppose.
However, I'm prepared to be ecstatically wrong, so come on Andy  udaman

Can't believe that this isn't on tv live for me, albeit at 2 am yawn  They are showing replays during the day, so I'll be up watching a livestream.  Luckily my son's out, so I can use his laptop Very Happy

Of course I am hoping that Andy will beat Nole today, but if he doesn't, strange it may sound I wont be upset or disappointed. He beat Berdych and that makes me happy and that will add confidence, a great start to the year. I too don't think he has been long enough with Lendl see any big changes, by May, June thats when I think we will see the changes.

Looking at Andy's H2H with Nole - 7-4 in Nole's favour - it maybe isn't as one sided as it looks on first sight.  Although they are the same age, Nole joined the main tour 2 years before Andy and won the first four of their meetings - I would think his greater experience came into play there.  Andy has won 4 of their last 7 meetings and has won over 3 sets in their last 2 meetings - Cincinnati, which was over 3 sets and the Aussie Open where Andy won 2 out of the first 3 sets.  It gives me added hope for today!

I would've preferred it if he had been playing Fed today and Djoko in the final.  Although he is playing better than he did this time last year and the year before, I don't feel he's ready to beat Djoko just yet although a surprise win isn't impossible.

I lost my bet and Murray is up first again I'm beginning to agree with all of you who moan re Federer
However Murray has a good record v Djokovic in best of three matches, so I think he'll win as long as he wins the first set.
