Thanks Cosmic Entity.  Didn't realise Andy was having problems with his arm.  I'm afraid I just don't get this ball thing - in my playing days, which admittedly were many years ago, I don't recall there being any differences.

Hope he plays Valencia since he won there in 2009, but I reckon it'll depend how quickly he recovers from his stint in the Far East, although I'd have thought that the chance of acquiring some more ranking points would be too good a chance to miss.  Can't see why he'd want to play in Basle if Fed and Djoko are there, although both will be somewhat ring-rusty.  He got to the QF in Paris last year for the third time in his career, so will be looking to improve on that, and at least he'll have a few day's break in the comfort of his own home before the WTF!

Also we now know why he isn't playing in the Hopman Cup, but, given that the AO starts on 16 January, he isn't going to give himself too much time to acclimatise before it if he's planning on coming from what will undoubtedly be a chilly UK.  I'd say the Kooyong Classic would be a good warm-up choice since it's only a four day event.

Has he said he'll go straight to Oz from UK Aileen?  I thought he'd just said he might start the training rather later, which I assumed meant in Miami but perhaps that isn't what he meant.

Andy is looking at 2 options to take a wild card; either Valencia or Basle.

However, I just have the feeling that he will choose Valencia as he has only 45 points to defend. But more importantly, Jamie and Andy won the doubles last year giving 500 doubles points to defend, and Andy wants to help his brother get back into doubles top 20. In addition, the current top seed is David Ferrer, and perhaps after tomorrow, Ferrer won't create any difficulties for Andy.

Basle maybe more problematic. Although Andy has no points to defend, he has Djokovic and Federer already committed to play as opposition. In Basle, Federer has 500 and Djokovic 300 points to defend. So maybe Andy would want to get in amongst them.

I still think it's Valencia for Andy, if a wild card is to be exercised. Andy will have a few days to recover before the Paris Masters. The way he is playing that should be enough time.

I don't think it matters which of the two tournaments he plays - he would still have 45 points to defend that week. Valencia may be the more likely option in terms of winning the event, but he may fancy testing himself out against Djoko/Fed. Either way, it's an interesting end to the season. Think

It would be great to see him go on the hunt for some Djoko/Fed blood. Not only would he have the chance to gain some points, but he would take be taking them from his nearest rival. Of course he would have a better chance keeping the run going by playing Valencia, but Basel would be a much, much smoother transition into Paris when it comes to conditions, so I'm hoping he goes with Basel. The prospect of beating Federer in his backyard is just too great.

Would rather he played Basel to be honest - Valencia courts are sooooo slow.

Perhaps Andy will feel duty bound to defend the doubles title in Valencia with Jamie if he's going to play at all that week.

Has he said he'll go straight to Oz from UK Aileen?  I thought he'd just said he might start the training rather later, which I assumed meant in Miami but perhaps that isn't what he meant.
What I said was based on what I now realise was my misinterpretation of this statement (another senior moment! doh) -

"But next year the Hopman Cup has been scratched off his schedule to give him time to recover from what he hopes will have been a winning run to the end of this season.  Murray said: "Because I go over and train in Miami I've just spent Christmas there for the last couple of years then gone on to Australia.  "It's a very long time to be away from home, especially if I have a hectic end to this year."

Initially I took that to mean he was intending to go to Miami but return home for the Festive Season.  I now see that it seems he spending Christmas at home and then going to Miami.

What really interests me, though, is this statement - "ANDY MURRAY says a frank talk-in with his coaching staff after losing to Rafael Nadal in the US Open semi-final has been the catalyst for his superb form since ... 'I wanted to know what was going to give me a better chance against Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer and it's been a good start.'"  This must surely mean that he is now not only listening to what is being said to him, but is acting on the advice given.  Also it would tend to suggest that Andy is intending to continue with this coaching arrangement with the Adidas team, at least for the foreseeable future.

I don't think it matters which of the two tournaments he plays - he would still have 45 points to defend that week. Valencia may be the more likely option in terms of winning the event, but he may fancy testing himself out against Djoko/Fed. Either way, it's an interesting end to the season. Think
I don't think it matters much either, assuming he feels rested enough to play (and Jez Green, his fitness trainer, said yesterday to one of the ESPN comms that he was in very good shape physically), because he really has to build on these 45 points to ensure that he keeps Mr Smugfed at bay and so end the year as No.3 for the first time - something which will be a big psychological advantage and incentive for him going into next season.

I watched the courside interview with Sky. Andy says he'll make his mind up about Valencia or Basel in 4 or 5 days, depending how he feels when he's had a rest.
Didnt say much about Paris.

His main goal is to prepare for the O2 Arena and go further than he's gone before andhave good preparations, he said.
I think thats his top priority now.

We have to wait and see.

Thanks, everyone, for all the input, links etc. - all very interesting.  Wherever Andy decides to play next, I’m hoping the first thing he does is take some well deserved rest, with very special care of his right arm.  Apparently he has had it since after the game with Nadal & after he had a long practice session with Ferrer if memory serves it would have been about that time, which means that he has played Kia & David & beat them with this handicap! It’s likely a kind of muscleitis (probably not the correct term) from overuse. I’ve had it, though not from tennis. I’m sure he will get excellent care for it, especially rest and some hot/cold treatments and massage. Just hoping he will take time for that to be all well before he puts it under more stress, to avoid having any sort of unnecessary cortisone type treatments.

I think Andy should rest until Paris. He needs to recharge his batteries. There is no point in risking injury/tiredness in lower rank events. He's almost certain to finish at number 3 so doesn't need to chase ranking points. Paris and the O2 are big events and he needs to be fresh for those.

Ive a feeling Andy is going to do a Djokovic next year. Theres been a subtle change in his game and I think Andy will win 2 Slams next year!

I don't think it's as much to do with playing a lot of tennis as the fact that he said that the balls had been different in each of the three Far East tournaments.  I'm not up on the ins and outs of this but seemingly balls these days can be different weights and sizes, and it's this constant chopping and changing that's done the damage.  Nadal was complaining about it as well saying it's bad for the shoulder muscles.  Apparently the standardising of balls has been a major issue for some years now.

I'm absolutely sure that Andy won't take any unnecessary risks with his health and also that he'll get excellent treatment from his physio, who's already apparently done a great job in getting him through these three tournaments.

Andys web site is showing next tourne is Paris 7th November.
It will do because that's the current schedule unless he decides otherwise.

Nov. 7th sounds like a decent re-start up time, what with travel involved, time for rest, etc.  I agree no sense pushing it.  Djokovic & Federer are taking a nice rest. Let’s let (as if it was our decision, ha, ha) Andy be fit & rested too, after the huge bit he just accomplished.  His team can work on keeping him match fit, team including Maggie, new doggie, Kim and the others.   I feel sure that Djoker & Fed are keeping themselves match fit in privacy.
