Courage isn't absence of fear but mastery of it.

My take on this is there's a major issue going on in the background that we know nothing about. Someone close to him has a serious illness, he's been getting death threats, he's on drugs or he has something else bad to hide. This isn't loss of form. It's tennis meltdown, wipeout. He doesn't want to be out there.
I think if there was a major personal issue going on it would affect Andy off-court as well. Yesterday, however, he said that the court seemed small and that he "just could not find the court". I know what he meant, but it also suggested some distortion or disorientation, which is very worrying. It could be a psychological thing or it could be the side-effects of prescription drugs for, say, depression. Any other type of drug would be out of the question, since players are dope-tested frequently, up to 3 times a day during tournaments. However, I go for the former explanation. From my own experience, I know that the mind can do strange things as the result of severe stress brought on by a particular situation, and what the effects of the subsequent depression/anxiety can do each time the sufferer is faced with that causal situation, without actually being aware of exactly what is wrong with them because they feel perfectly OK when they are away from it. If this is the case, Andy
really
does need expert help. In short, Andy may genuinely not realise just how far his loss in the AO has affected him on a sub-conscious level - that every time he goes on court to compete his brain tells him it just doesn't want to be there, with disastrous results, but trying to get him to understand this, and to seek help, could well be very difficult.

I am sorry you did not see Andy but he has become a complete and utter pain the rear end. You are lucky because you may seee two players who want to be there and are going to play a good match.
Hope you enjoy it and don't worry about the English, half the people who live in the Uk have trouble with it as well.

To be honest I found one of his post match interviews a bit perplexing. I
think
it was the BBC one. His entire demeanour was really odd as he seemed to be rather cynical about his loss, shrugging it off and almost jovially repremanding himself.
Could he in be in total denial of his situation, whatever that is?

I've noticed that too in recent interviews, and, yes, unfortunately, he could well be in a state of denial, and if you read my post today (06:50 pm) you'll get an idea why.

I'm a bit of a novice here when it comes to allowed presciption drugs and all the others that are not. Are you talking about Valium compounds- like Diazapam (sorry about the spelling Elly) if so, they are
so addictive
and what ones can he take that would be allowed by the authorities

I'm not Elly, but can understand the confusion!
I was really referring to anti-depressants, which I have taken for some time now and which are not addictive. Valium is the same as Diazepam - same drug, different name. It belongs to a group of drugs known as benzodiazepines, which are used as sedatives and which are highly addictive and can be a bitch to get off if you've been on them for a long time - excuse my language, but I tried to wean myself off a very low dose of diazepam a year ago and the withdrawal symptoms were so unpleasant and long-lasting that I had to go back on it again.
I have absolutely no idea what prescription drugs are permitted by the ITF and other sporting bodies, but they're so down on drug abuse now that I know for a fact that there are sportspersons who avoid taking
any
prescription or legal over-the-counter drugs whilst competing in case they get into trouble. For instance, one well-known athlete suffers from asthma but simply will not use her supposedly permitted inhaler for that very reason.

No confusion with Elly & you Aileen. It was just in case she was on-line and wanted to correct my spelling!
Thanks for the expanation though. It was as I had thought.
P.S. Are you in the medical profession??

Sorry, I've just got so used all my life to having people get my rather uncommon name wrong, and I could understand why Elly/Aileen fell into the same category! Also Elly has been a regular contributor to MW for very much longer than I have.
No, I'm not in the medical profession. although I did work for a while as a secretary in that sector. Unfortunately, however, I've had so many dealings with doctors for my own health problems over the past few years that I've become fairly well acquainted with some medical conditions as well as drugs and their uses and side-effects, but anything I say is based entirely on my own personal experience - I am not an expert.
PS: Get yourself a good dictionary, then you won't need anyone to check your spelling!

Ausia's lovely comments make interesting reading. Her eye-witness account is the shining jewel in the crown in this thread. Many of us have chipped in with our thoughts, feelings and recommendations following Andy's loss to Kohlschreiber, and yet Ausia's post is the only one I've seen that really hits the spot. You can't beat being there and seeing someone you admire and support with your own eyes. I was fascinated with her description of Andy's physicality as to me he is the outstanding physical specimen in tennis and his presence on court is unmatched - win or lose he is always a major talking point and like it or not, he is a media darling. The headlines on p82 of yesterday's Daily Mail were enormous, declaring I WAS RUBBISH, ADMITS MURRAY, and in the article below, Mike Dickson's match report concluded: 'Clearly one thing he must do is escape his apparent mind-set that only results in Grand Slams matter. Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves, as the adage goes... Such is Murray's quality, things can surely only get better.' I agree with Dickson that Andy's mindset is fixed on the majors, and to some extent, understand why, as when he was winning Masters titles back to back, the media and some of his supporters made it clear only the Slams would do. I even remember posting on MW that I wouldn't be surprised if Andy did just that in view of the dissatisfaction his fantastic achievements of last year were greeted with. Of course, once again, this is speculation, so back to Ausia's post where she observed how happy Andy and his team-mates were and how Andy appeared to be a happy young guy having the time of his life. That'll do for me, and let's face it, some people on here appear to be a whole lot more depressed and angst-ridden about Andy's temporary blip than he does himself.
