Rogers Cup R2: Murray vs Granollers

Quote

Despite the predictions and concern of many that Murray would meet Grigor Dimitrov in his first match, Marcel Granollers came straight from his title win in Kitzbuehel to defeat the much-hyped Bulgarian 6-4, 6-4.

Their H2H is 3-2 to Murray, who will no doubt be relieved to be playing the Spanish clay-courter without the pain of the back problem which caused him to retire during their match in Rome.  He will not, though, be taking anything for granted in his first competitive match since Wimbledon.

The Tradesman to sand the grunter to dust in 2.

I fancied Granollers to get through. Ther'es something about the confidence that comes with the habit of winning that makes any player dangerous. Also, there is a real weakness in the Dimitrov game - maybe in his head. He still has much to prove.
Although Andy's coming into the match pretty cold, I would expect him to be too good to lose. Could go 3 though.

Marcel is a v.good claycourter not so hot on HC but as you say sid confidence is massive part of the game, and he will be feeling pretty pleased with himself after Kitzbuhel.

I dont expect a demo job by Andy I expect maybe a 7/5 6/3 type of match, wouldnt be suprised if it went to 3 either, after winning USO he still had poor starts to matches and I dont suppose winning wimby will completely change that either. i think its just andy.

Waiting for this OOP! I think they are waiting to see if Raonic wins before they decide on schedule.

Murray vs Granollers 12 noon (5 pm BST).  Doubles match is 3rd on Court 9.

Andy is bound to be match rusty, although he played a 'match set' against Rafa yesterday, which he lost, but hopefully it'll have sharpened him up a bit.  Given his frequent slow starts in tournaments though I'm expecting either a tight 2-setter or possibly 3-setter here - unless jet-lag finally catches up with Granollers!

I wouldn't be concerned with practice sets Smile

The 3-2 is misleading as he retired in Rome so I personally look at this a 2-1.  After all he did win the second set and I am sure he could have done it in 2 had he not hurt his back.

Andy,s gotta be careful, this guy sounds that he could be a cereal killer. Think

Murray in 2 in a very one-sided match.  He's match rusty but Granollers will be very tired.  Feel a bit sorry for G starting so early after late afternoon match yesterday and imminent jetlag.

The h2h is a bit misleading. Rome was a draw Smile. I think Granollers wins were ages ago as well.

I can't see anything but an Andy win here. I've voted Andy in three, given that it's Andy's first match for a while on hard, but it could equally be straight sets. I'm expecting a bump or two in the road, so, of course, Andy will win easily, just to show that me picking him to do the Queen's/Wimbles double was a total fluke Smile.

doh oh no the punster is getting into training for US hard court season.

While being first on has the advantage of no hanging around, even with Andy's new superstar status the stadium could be pretty empty.  So it may feel even more of an anti climax after the last time he was playing a match.  But I'm sure Andy will be prepared for that.  I voted 3 just on grounds that Andy might be match rusty and could even be a bit flat to start with if no crowd.
