It must be one of the factors, along with getting some pre-season training.  Being an invitation tournament, there isn't any ranking points on offer, is there?
It's an exhibition, so no prize money or ranking points. However there will be fairly hefty appearance fees, particularly given who's hosting the tournament.

For all intents and purposes it is merely a relaxed warm-up for the new season and a chance to try out some new shots.

I hope I'll be able to see that. A bit later or a bit earlier would have been easier for me, but never mind.

It will be interesting to see Andy play Rafa again if he gets through Tipsy. I don't suppose either of them will go mad, but it would be good to see them go for it just a bit, to get some idea of where they are now. I want to see how well Rafa is moving too.

I suppose the thing really is that it's a bit of fun and will be a good warm up for the AO.

I may be wrong but I thought abhu Dhabi was 4 hours ahead of London so I make it 1pm start here Smile

It should be a good opportunity to get back into the habit of competitive match play, without the outcome being all that important.  In that respect, it's good that Andy doesn't get the bye as it should (fingers crossed) give him extra match practice.  It's really Nadal that needs it, but perhaps he'll just be happy to turn up for his appearance fee and hope that his training stands him in good stead.   He doesn't have much to lose

I mean, it'll be nice to start the year with a winning streak, but far better to be shocked back into competitive mode at an exhibition than during the first proper tournament.
