Murray finally winning over the British public?
« on: July 09, 2012, 08:00 AM »
Straight after the match, I knew what was coming. When I saw Andy cry like that, in the finals of Wimbledon with the entire nation watching, I felt sure he would have won a lot of people over.
There will always be the Murray-haters who interpret everything as a negative. But think about all those people on the fence inclined not to like him simply because he seems miserable and lifeless based on their limited exposure to him. We all have friends and colleagues like that and they surely represent a large part of the British public. I believe many of those have now been won over.
What does everyone else think?

Yes, finally the average Briton has seen what we have known for years. You know, in a strange way, losing this match might be exactly what he needed. An Olympic gold would be good too...

A short article, which picks out The Metro as having the worst Andy Murray front page:

That's not the headline on my Metro this morning, the pictures are the same but the headline reads "Tears at Fed time ..." and the pics are great, very emotional.

If my facebook feed is anything to go by, yes. Finally friends are posting saying 'oh I get it now' and for those who say they were completely thrown by the tears, I've been directing them to the clips of him crying after the Davis Cup last year.
That said, I've lost count of the number of radio phone- ins I've had to turn off in the last 12 hours asking if he is a cry baby. No idea what the responses were, I couldn't listen, but the hosts annoyed me to start with.

My sister is telling me that The Wright Stuff is being very positive about Murray and his speech this morning. She feels everyone is changing their opinions about him now.
And I know in the car this morning listening to Capital FM, they were being very kind about him as well. Replaying his speech and comparing it to an emotional speech in one of the Rocky films.

What? Did nobody see him cry after the Australian Open, and say 'I can cry like Roger...'? Oh, of course not, they were probably lagering themselves up over Sunderland vs Norwich or something.

haha ^^ yes. Wimbledon exposes the tennis world. Those 2 weeks.. everyone is apparently a Murray fan. They don't even like tennis.. yet they still watch it. I'm not going into any detail you know the problems. tennis doesn't get the recognition its deserves

I heard one caller on 5Live the other night telling another caller "you people need to get back to talking about football, that's what you understand".
Harsh, but true!
