Agreed. But a British player about to cause a bit of an upset and the British crowd choose to support the German! That's a little bit much I think.

And besides, if you believe the English don't deserve it because of the treatment to Scottish players, surely the biggest kick up their arses would be for a Scotsman to win Wimbledon, no?

No, the best way to kick them in the arses is for Scottish players to boycott the event all together but this is not going to happen with the compulsory slam points that are available.

I don't care much if he doesn't play in DC either, I just care when the truth isn't told.

I'm not that interested in Davis cup either as only the higher ranking ties seem to create the buzz and team GB are never up there.

If Andy feels a lack of priority to Davis cup ties, it puts himself in a position that I slightly
sympathize with. If he comes out and says that he is not interested in Davis cup the press will murder him for not being there for queen and country etc.

What would we do in this situation?....sort of catch 22...I would probably lie as its the easiest way out...hehe sorry, just being honest

I wouldn't lie and I would to explain that DC is a joke without ranking points. Sure the media would rip you apart but he gets enough of that anyway, what's the harm in a bit more.

Btw, nothing can make them play 100% and struggle ,etc because they get almost nothing back.

Here's how it probably would have gone.....Andy plays fat Dave, goes to 5 sets, Andy wins? Long shot as clay's Dave's fave surface. Lets just say Andy wins. OK GB 1 up...Jamie or Boggo loses to Calleri...1-1. Andy too knackered to play dubs. Jamie and Hutch most likely lose narrowly.....Tie over!!!!  OK.... say Jamie and Hutch win......leaving Andy another toughie against Calleri who's never lost a DC on clay, leaving Andy probably nursing an injury going onto another surface........rest of season goosed again. We all moan that he shouldnt be playing DC.
Sue BArker said today that Tim threw himself into DC and probably aggravated his back therefore restricting his career.
Just a thought Tommy. I don't blame him for pulling out. He shoulda called JL tho.

Initially I was very disappointed when Andy pulled out.  Having thought about it a bit more, it proves that he is very serious about his tennis right now.  He was clearly stung by the Tsonga defeat, why wouldn't he be?  Andy was unlucky enough to encounter an unexpectedly white hot player in the Aussie first round who went all the way to the final.  The others knew in subsequent rounds what to expect but still couldn't get past him.  I think if Andy had been forewarned and had met him in a later round he would have beaten him.   In missing the DC he probably worked it out that GB would probably lose anyway and that he would be drained on the clay with the Argie specialists.  Like Federer who also withdrew from DC, he has got to gather all his resources and strength to be really ready for the titans he is going to meet in his own right.

Ali, as for your Wimbledon experience.  I live in Wimbledon and am English, and I know what you mean about the quirky Wimbledon crowd.  I was lucky enough to see Henman in his semi-final against Ivanisovic back in 2001.  On arrival at Centre Court, we were all being handed placards with pics of Andre Agassi (he was in the other semi against Pat Rafter).  When I declined and requested one with Tim Henman they looked at me as if I had two heads.   Rolling Eyes

Clementine, when I called the crowd at Wimbledon arseholes, I was not talking about you because you most obviously are the exception that proves the rule hug

Link to the Becker Story

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sport/tennis/375514.stm

"Cheered on by the majority of the crowd, Becker - who is to retire in July - clawed his way back by taking the third set 6-4, but had to save three match points on serve to stay in the next set at 4-5."

Becker was a truly great player heading for retirement - you can see why people in the crowd would choose to cheer him on in his final grand-slam rather than cheering for a player ranked 294 in the world   who would probably lose in the next round. In short, there were more complicated factors at play than nationality.

For example, say Federer was retiring this July after Wimbledon and came up against someone like Richard Bloomfield (English, ranked #334) in the first round. Who would the crowd support? Not clear to me, but I'd predict Federer.

Andy has a big following in England too, and a realistic chance of doing well in the tournament, and I'd be very surprised if he didn't have the majority of the crowd behind him in ever match he plays at Wimbledon.

What do you mean?

If Murray told the truth by saying "I don't want to play Davis Cup because I consider my ATP career more important." I don't see how anyone could not believe that.

OMG! Stop going back to your initial posts on the site. We told you why we slated you - because you deserved it. You are now making valuable contributions which are going to be ruined by your refusal to "get over it" and move on.

On a side note, that post is stupid, because why should anyone believe anything ANYONE says when most of us have no idea who anyone is. That is the idiotic thing to do i.e. trusting what a total stranger tells you. If I did that last night, I would have given about £30 to 6 different people who ALL happened to have been mugged at 8pm ish on Leith Walk in Edinburgh.... I knew it was the "dodgy end" but I didn't realise is was that bad..... lmao

Cry me a river, build me a bridge etc etc.
