January 1-3.

Abu Dhabi: A bonanza awaits tennis fans in the UAE on New Year's Day 2009 when six of the best players in the world line up to contest the inaugural Capitala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

Confirming their entries for this elite pre-season tournament yesterday were world number one Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer (No. 2), Andy Murray (No. 4), Nikolay Davydenko (No. 5), Andy Roddick (No. 6) and James Blake (No. 10).

The January 1-3 tournament will be held at the 5,000-seater Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex at Zayed Sports City.

So is he not playing Doha then (starts on Jan 5th)? He could, but it would seem like a lot of tennis in one go to me, if he's expecting to defend his Doha title. I would rather have seen him head over to Oz to play either Brisbane (Jan 5th start) or Sydney (Jan 12th start). That way, he's already over there for a good few days and getting some competitive games in before the Oz Open starts.

Edit: that's a slap in the face for Kooyong as well!

I don't see why he can't play Abu Dhabi and Doha, their not that far from each other and if he doesn't have to play until the second day in Doha that would give him 2 full days in between.

I just have reservations about the value of exhibitions with a Slam so close. If he plays both Abu Dhabi and Doha, he's used up most of his playing time pre-Oz Open. I'd rather see him getting to Oz early to deal with jet lag, play a competitive tournament there to get used to conditions (appreciate they'll be different between Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne, but it's still Australian hard courts) and be settled in the country ready for a full go at the big tournament.

I thought the Arab Emirates are only 5-6 hours behind Australia, that's like London to New York, Andy should be okay with that by now.  Think

Totally agree with Kitkat though, seems ridiculous to just go there for an exhibition, defending Doha is probably the main reason. Plus there's a lot of money/sponsorship deals floating around in places like Abu Dhabi/Dubai/Doha etc, Andy would never consider such a thing of course Whistle

If the exhibition is round robin format then he is guaranteed to play more than one game.

With Doha he could end up with him getting caught cold and going out in the first round, and then going into the AO with only one match under his belt.

Not really fused about the loss of Doha points or what particular events he plays in, just as long as his preparation for the start of next year is good then that is all that counts.

That's it - he needs a few games against toplayers to prep him for the AO.  He needs to drop a few tournies anyway to avoid burnout and this decision makes a lot of sense IMO

This is getting shown on Sky Sports 1 between 11am and 3pm on January 1st and 2nd and presumably on the Saturday (3rd) as well.

The draw has apparently been made with Andy to play James Blake on New Year's Day, 2nd on Court. The winner will then play Federer the next day at 11am GMT.

Interesting format, with Nadal and Federer get byes to the semis.
On Thursday, Andy plays Blake and Davydenko plays Roddick, play starting at 3pm local time, 11am GMT.
On Friday, the winner of Andy's match plays Federer, and the winner of the other match plays Nadal, play starting at the same time.
The final will be Saturday at 5pm local time, 1pm GMT.
Prize money of $250,000, winner takes all.
