I couldn't disagree more.  I think they are polar opposites.

For a start, I think managing people's expectations is a very positive thing to do.  He's pointing out that it's to be expected that Andy won't rush back to full fitness.

It's the very opposite of those who think anything short of an instantaneous return to full fitness and impervious form is something to wail about, and one of the signs of the impending tennis apocalypse.

He's clearly a big fan of Andy's, but if you follow him the rest of the time, he's a big fan of many tennis players and tennis in general, and manages to gush when not talking about Andy.  I don't think he shows Andy any special favouritism, but I do love that he takes the mickey out of that perception and sometimes plays up to it.  In fact, I think he enjoys trolling the people who are upset at the thought of any journalist saying nice things about Andy.

As for the identity of PF - I have a few on my short-list, but I'm against trying to find out who he really is.  It would spoil the fun if he were outed, and if he thought people were onto him, he might give up, or at least cut back.  We can't be having that!
I think Andy's doing a pretty good job himself of managing expectations, and he's been straight with his fans from the outset, which is something that Nadal wasn't, although I accept that a little reinforcement from somebody as respected as Harman is isn't going to go amiss.  Despite it all though I feel that inevitably there will still be those who will be looking for a more instant recovery.

As for PF I haven't looked at his tweets for ages.  Somehow they just became a little less funny last year as Federer became a more pathetic figure, but I see that Fed is lording it around in Brisbane as arrogant as ever so I must catch up with PF.  I too hope that we never find out who he really is, even after he 'retires', because he's become very much a person in his own right.

I really hope Andy does opt for the tourney in Auckland, it would give him more matches, if he doesn't still fine, only him and his team can make the decision.

I don't know who PF is either and wouldnt want to find out - makes me giggle a lot! i even got hired by him once LOL

I really must go and have a look.  I think it's about four months since I last paid him a visit.

According to this article in The Times Andy's company, Seventy Seven , have trade marked his name and upon succeeding in the application they were informed that many others had sought to trade mark his name so it's a good job he got in there first!! Also says his company made a profit if £6 million last year alone. Not too shabby.

Trademark approval means Murray is now the name of the game

"The agreement covers more than 100 goods, including DVDs, computer games, sportswear, calendars and stationery
Andy Murray underwear and action figures could be on the way after the tennis champion was allowed to trademark his own name (Kat Lay writes).
The Wimbledon champion, from Dunblane, applied to the UK Intellectual Property Office to register his name to protect his image rights, and the application was approved and registered on Boxing Day.
Several people unconnected to the 26-year-old had made applications to trademark his name following his Wimbledon win last summer.
His new trademark covers more than 100 goods, including DVDs, computer games, sportswear, calendars and stationery as well as lingerie, Hallowe’en costumes and dolls.
Other categories include baby clothes, slippers, pyjamas, roller skates and surf boards.
Murray hired Harrison Goddard Foote, a trademark specialist law firm, to handle the application. David Potter, a trademark attorney at the firm, said: “This was done to protect Andy’s rights to his name and is something that many wealthy sports stars have done in the past.
“We only found out after the application was made that other applications had been made bearing Andy’s name and we have successfully taken action to have them stopped.
“Some of the items on the list may seem a bit bizarre but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is going to sell those items as merchandise.
“When making these applications you always include a full range of items in each class.”
The IPO has refused trademarks bearing the words “Andy Murray”, “Andy Murray Wimbledon Winner” and “Andy Murray Tennis Champion” in recent months, all applied for by businesses wishing to sell sports equipment bearing Murray’s name.
Murray made the application through his company, 77 Management, which recently reported profits of more than £6 million for last year.
In 2005, Sir Alex Ferguson failed in a bid to trademark his name after a judge ruled it was “devoid of any distinctive character”.
The former Manchester United boss had asked for exclusive rights to sell posters, photos, stickers and transfers of himself under the 1994 Trademarks Act. Kevin Bridges, a Scots comedian, also launched a bid recently to trademark his name."

^ Hmm - a nice little earner!  No surprise though that there were plenty of opportunists seeking to cash in on his name.

Sorry eeyore -

"Andy Murray turns down Auckland wild card"

The Wimbledon champion has turned down a wildcard offer from Auckland ATP tournament director Karl Budge and is expected to play in the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne instead.

It means New Zealand number one Rubin Statham will be given the last remaining main draw wildcard.

"We heard overnight from Andy's team that he will not take up the Heineken Open wildcard, which means an exciting opportunity for Rubin Statham to play in the main draw," Budge told ONE Sport today.

My only surprise is that it took him so long to do it. Unofficial Andy Murray merchandise has been available on the internet for years.

Thanks Aileen - slightly disappointing but as I say only him and his team know what is the best warm up etc for the AO for him.  Assuming they feel just a couple of matches at the EXO will get him readier who knows.

Re the trademarking, glad he has done it, i'm with Iona, really surprised it took him so long, but then he was concentrating on the tennis side rather than the business side.  I guess that is what his company etc are there for

Agreed.  On one hand, it's good to know they've got these things in order, but at the same time, you don't want it to be their priority.  Then again, a lot of it can be about stopping shoddy merchandise from being produced that looks to be in your name, rather than Andy having his own range of knickers. lol

It's probably not worth bothering about the unofficial stuff in the early days, and could be taken as a compliment, and a nice something for fans, when there are no plans for anything official.
