Andy Murray - Olympic and USO champion! :)

Also do not see Mr Smug taking part in any negotiations after all he is on the ATP players council. It would appear he is happy with his lot, after all he won one million dollars in one tournament earlier in the year.
Rafa, Davydenko and Stakhovsky have all criticised Federer for this recently. Rafa even said that Federer doesn't want to ruin his image as a 'gentleman' by pushing for changes. Federer may well be sympathetic to the concerns of other players, but he keeps a noticeable silence when other players are voicing concerns (e.g. at the US Open last year).

Full article here: http://play-tennis.info/5402/andy-murray-praises-french-open-organizers-for-prize-money-rise/

“Hopefully from 2013 onwards, the prize money will go up for every round,” Murray said. “People were talking about striking or boycotting, a lot of it came from guys ranked between 20 and 100. This is the start, so hopefully it will be throughout the tournament.”

He also defended the right for players going out early in tournaments to earn more money.

“In golf, for example, if you don’t make the cut you don’t make any money. But in tennis it’s a little different,” he said. “In golf, a lot of guys play for 30 years, seniors events (have) very good prize money. Tennis can be, for some guys, a five- or six-year career.”

The key point is that Andy has been defending the interests of the lesser players who go out in early rounds - good for him.
And I forget who it was now who expressed surprise that Ivan is with him in MC but he'd said that Ivan would be with him this and next week to see what needs working on before RG when he'll return.  Andy will be on his own in between.

I agree about Federer he was elected to the ATP council. It is his duty to represent other players who make complaints. Nadal apparently resigned because his and Andy's views were not being taken into account. Federer is a yes man (for himself) and in no way could you say he represents the lower ranked players. As far as I am aware he has done nothing for the lower ranked players who are struggling to make ends meet. He should along with the others on the council pushing for better payment for players who are knocked out in the first round. He if he is truly interested in players remuneration should be pushing the point but only seems to be interested in himself and his "image" and his money. No wonder the organisers of those tournaments  love him and treat him like royalty he is no gentleman.

I'm confused about this Ruthie because in his post-match interview Andy distinctly says Lendl will be helping him over the next 5 or 6 weeks. Think   Also he said laughingly that Lendl only arrived in MC on Tuesday so couldn't take the credit for yesterday's win!

Aileen my understanding is that Lendl will spend another week with Andy after Barcelona working on what he's learned from watching him at the first 2 clay tournos and will then go back to US to return just before RG.  But perhaps the plan has changed or Andy was just missing out the bit in between post-Barcelona and pre-RG.  And of course they were working together practising on clay in Miami before Andy flew over to Europe but I liked Andy's little joke about not giving him credit!
Have just read this direct quote in the Indie, which bears out my theory: 'In the build-up to the FO, the time I spend with him after these 2 tournos, the 5 or 6 days before [should that be after? ed] Barcelona and the 4 or 5 days before the FO will be v, v beneficial'.
Thanks for the D Tel link hazybear - is that in lieu of your match report?  Whistle
Anyway it was good to read a tennis correspondent acknowledging that Andy made right decision over DC.

London 2012: Andy Murray ready to make amends for Beijing

If Andy Murray is just another tennis superstar paying lip service to the Olympic Games, he is putting up a very good front.

With three runner-up finishes to his name in Grand Slam finals,   the 24-year-old spends most of his life working towards - and discussing - that elusive first major title.

But, born in 1987, Murray is part of a generation that has grown up with tennis as part of the Olympics, and the leading players' attitudes to the Games now are markedly different to those in 1988, when the sport returned after a 64-year break.

"Tennis at the Olympics has become a big deal, everyone plays it now, whereas 10, 15 years ago guys were skipping the Olympics," he says. "It's one of the best experiences I've had as an athlete.

"I went to the opening ceremony in Beijing - it was unbelievable. It's a bit surreal because it's such a massive thing and you don't quite realise at the time. As a tennis player you're used to walking out into the stadium and it's like, 'Hi, how're you doing?' When you walk out in the Olympic arena it's just very different."

Murray shared a room with his brother, Jamie, in Beijing ("not a happy place after we lost") but is yet to decide whether he will stay in the village in London.

Despite his enthusiasm to do so, he admits that living just 20 minutes from the Olympic venue of Wimbledon means that basing himself in Stratford could be an unnecessary hassle.

The remainder of the interview can be found here

Thanks for clarification Ruthie.  "After" Barcelona would make more sense surely given that that tournie starts on Monday?  Also Lendl will need that time to talk things over before Madrid and Rome.

It's a heck of a trek from East London to Wimbledon, even in a chauffeur driven limo. I understand the top players are all staying close to the courts, rather than staying in the "village."

Andy should stay at home.  I can understand why he finds the idea of the Village attractive - but is it worth the stress of fighting his way through traffic every time he practises or plays?

absolutely agree Aileen and bbh - he can't put his love of the Olympic experience above his chances of winning the thing.
