Nothing. It has nothing to do with him playing in India. It's a case of one paper adding 2 and 2 and making 5 or even 10. This is to help his financial promotion and to get more companies etc like Rado sponsoring him.

As far as I read it, it is simply that Murray wanted to stay with the current management team, but they didn't have the expertise about sport/tennis that they needed. So they have added the doubles player into the mix. There is nothing to say that Murray has signed to do this 20/20 thing. Do any of us seriously think that he will risk more Grand Slams or titles just for a quick buck? If it happens I suspect it will be in a couple of years, when he is near retirement. The trouble is the press are being lazy, and merging two different stories into the same article. I think we should trust Murray and Lendl to know exactly what they are doing.

I panic at the slightest thing about our hero. This is not worrying me at all.

Slightly odd though to take on Bhupati "as we look to expand into the Indian sub continent and other developing markets" (Simon Fuller), but then not take part in his 20/20 plans, and it's true that India misses out on the chance to see top players live. Clearly the tennis isn't intended to be very demanding with only one set, and no advantage points, but there's the travel and it's hard to see how training wouldn't be affected.

Couldn't complain about over-crowded schedule either. The week between Paris and WTF is being re-instated next year.

From Times of India

Bhupathi, who went to college in the United States before turning pro, will handle Murray's commercial interests. In what is a breakthrough move for sports management in India, the 38-year-old Bhupathi pointed out that Murray, who already has contracts with top brands like Adidas, Head, Rado and the Royal Bank of Scotland, will look to widen his range on the business front. They are looking to touch a record US $200million in Murray's off the court earnings in the next five years.

Bhupathi and Fuller, who is best known for being the creator of the 'Idol' franchise, and whose business operation XIX Entertainment currently manages the likes of David and Victoria Beckham and F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, told TOI exclusively that they were looking to capitalize on the 'power of two' in the fields of media, entertainment and tennis. The new partnership, which will be based in the Middle East, has been created to extend relationships and showcase opportunities in developing markets around the world, especially given the burgeoning sports and entertainment budgets in the region.

Off-court earnings of $200 million over 5 years is a jaw-dropping target!

I see Ugo Colombini will be giving Andy 'on the ground tennis support and specialist resourcing.' He's also the agent behind DelPo.

I'd already posted a couple of articles on another thread which touched on the Twenty20 where there have been discussions with Craig Tiley (AO tournie director). He'd said "We are aware of it. He (Bhupati) has kept us up to date with what is going on," .. "There would be some cross promotion, some partner opportunities. We have already sat down with Mahesh and we are in the process of exploring what (those opportunities) can be.".. "Tennis needs a big uplift in compensating players beyond the grand slams. Anything ... that brings investment and funding, we support that."

I don't know much about cricket, but the T20 format seems to have been hugely successful in this sport.

This jumped out at me from that article:
There is a strong demand for tennis in the region. India and China have expressed an interest in eventually hosting a grand slam event.

It's all very interesting, and may be part of a much bigger picture.

I can see the case for expanding tennis in India and China but as for the need to 'compensate' players beyond the grand slams I don't think the top players need any more 'compensation' so I hope this means this initiative won't just be directed at involving the big names.

Federer's Gamble

http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2013/04/next-few-months-will-tell-us-lot-about-roger-federer/46973/

It’s a stretch to say that Andy Murray took the No. 2 ranking away from Roger Federer when he won the Miami Masters on Sunday. It’s more like Federer left the No. 2 ranking on the dashboard of his car and walked away—with the windows down and the engine running. Somebody was bound to come along.

No disrespect to Murray here; he’s a deserving number two and he may well have wrenched that ranking directly from Federer’s hand, given the chance. But Federer didn’t even show up in Miami. Thus, he gave up the paltry 45 points he earned there last year (he was upset in the third round by Andy Roddick) instead of beefing up his resistance to the Murray surge by replacing those points with a better haul.

----------------------------------------------------

Yes, no disrespect to Murray indeed. Peter Bodo really does rile me.

If Andy had been playing every possible tournament, and not missed Madrid etc in the last 12 months, he, and all of the Fed fans grasping at similar straws, might have a point.   The fact is that Andy has played in less tournaments this year than Federer is mysteriously not worth mentioning.  I've noticed a few trying to justify the H2H by suggesting it's because of the age difference, as if most of their meetings have been during Andy's prime, but after Federer's.   The same applies to the H2H with Nadal apparently.  They might have a point if he ends up with a negative H2H with Djokovic.

Perhaps it would be more realistic to say that Federer knew that Andy would be over-taking him, so tactically pulled over to make the process less painful for himself.

Looking at the Race to London points, Fed fans need to stop worrying about Andy.  Not that you can place too much emphasis on the race points at this stage of the year.  Even a fading Fed is likely to have more consistent form across the year than most of those above him right now.

Sorry Milly, not heard this interview. Not sure why I feel uneasy about Judy giving her views - I guess I don't want anything which might come between Andy and Lendl...

This ATP article though is quite general about Andy's links with Bhupathi - it doesn't mention the IPL style tennis: http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2013/04/14/Bhupathi-Globosport-XIX-Entertainment-Joint-Venture-Murray.aspx

Here is the interview:
http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/scotland/sw/sw_20130406-1307a.mp3

Some of the things she said:
"..you've just got to be looking all the time at where you're going to ply your trade.."
"..the tennis market in Asia is absolutely enormous..in China and Japan the number of people playing is absolutely huge.."
"..a lot of opportunities over there now.."
"..you need to go where there are opportunities.."

She sounds enthusiastic about it, and spoke about how big the market is.

Another guy (Graham Spears??) who covers golf and football talked about how big brands are trying to get into China, and said that Man United were trying to take their brand to China and India.

Judy also spoke about Andy's Miami match, Grand Slam prize money, Dan Evans and Heather Watson.

Too much to mention, so I tried to pick out the bits I thought most people would want to know about at a glance.
Have a listen..

Thanks Scotnadian, just had a quick listen. It's not like she's confirmed his participation but certainly seems very enthusiastic about it...I can see this going ahead with Andy taking part...lets hope it's a 2014 start rather than the end of this year.....
