Olympics 2012 QF: Andy Murray v Nicolas Almagro
« on: August 01, 2012, 10:47 PM »
Britain's number 1 will take on Nicolas Almagro of Spain on Court 1 at SW19 in the Quarter-Finals of the Olympics tomorrow.
The pair are first up on Court 1 so if there are no rain delays play will open at noon.
Almagro has been on fine form this year and had some decent wins over players in the top 20. However, Andy is on a mission not to lose on the green grass of home again this year

I honestly think this will be easier than the last match versus Baggie. I had to switch-off after the first set and there is no doubt Andy was up against it. It wasn't that he was playing badly its just that Baggie was playing so well. It was almost Fed-like. But the top 4 guys always seem to tough it out and hang in there at the top tournaments.
Skybet have Andy 9-1 ON. He's a bigger favourite to beat Almagro than Federer is to beat Isner or Joker is to beat Tsonga. Almagro's best surface is surely clay and he has no pedigree on grass.
Andy in 2!

Incidentally great to see Tsonga win easily today. Maybe he can shock the Joker tomorrow.

Almagro on a grass court in the QFs, the equivalent of pooping out a golden egg.
Extremely fortunate opening up of the draw, hope Murray can take advantage. He is playing a lot of tennis these days, and I hope he can win this in straights.

Sorry, I really detest Facebook otherwise I would have helped. Don't like twitter either. Hope others join though.

Hazel Pinner
Looking forward to Murray v Almagro tomorrow. Should be a really engaging match with a lot of interesting tennis.
I voted bronze btw. Went with my head - just think Djokovic will prove too good in the SFs but that Andy will be able to beat DelPo in the bronze play-off. That's how I can see it going anyway.

John has posted some passionate pictures of Andy on the pictures thread but none were big enough for me to cut down for my H2H but I found one that was from the match, and one from Almagro's match
So this is a 11 pm start for me, which is good, though I doubt that I'll be able to get any sleep beforehand.

Sunny/cloudy/very warm for Wimbledon according to the BBC.
Love the pics.
I really don't know what to think about this match but as Almagro is Spanish and therefore probably happier on clay, conditions should favour Andy, but just hope he spares us the fright we got yesterday and comes out all guns blazing!

I'm not thinking about medals just yet. One match at a time ...
I have joined Twitter and Facebook although use them very sparingly, but am happy to help MW.

He is definitely a clay-court specialist; the majority of his ranking points are made up from the clay tournaments. That's not to say he's not dangerous on this surface, but I think Baghdatis will prove to have been a much sterner test than Almagro.

^ Having now read Andy's comments on this match he certainly isn't taking anything for granted, as usual, because Almagro has been an improved player on all surfaces this year, and the fact that he got to the QF without dropping a set speaks for itself, also he's another one who doesn't go away easily. Could be very close.
