Julian Finney: My 2013 Iconic Shot

http://infocus.gettyimages.com/post/julian-finney-my-2013-iconic-shot#.UqtITSe2b0F

Getty Images Sports Photographers have captured over 27,000 sporting events worlwide. In this series, some of our best known photographers and contributors recall the most iconic image they have captured...

My most iconic photo of 2013 is of Andy Murray climbing down from the crowd after winning Wimbledon. He was returning to court after thanking his family, coach and support team.

Andy's win ended a 77 year wait for a British Men’s Singles Winner - a huge moment in the history of British sport and in particular, for tennis.

With the stunning summer light pouring into Centre Court, it was a photographer's dream to shoot his celebration in these conditions.

I shot it on a wide angle lens to show the size of the crowd who were watching his every move. The closest of fans were able to reach out and touch him like he was the Messiah.

By shooting this so wide, Andy looks very small in the frame and therefore highlights the huge crowd. It resulted in a different picture to most others from the day.

I was positioned in a rare spot called Platform B on Centre Court. This is a position you wouldn’t get at most other tournaments, squeezed in amongst other photographers in between the Royal Box and the player’s coach and family areas.

I carried two Canon bodies with a selection of lenses for the Final and I changed my zoom lens to a wide 16-35mm just in time to achieve this shot.

The shot was used as a wraparound on the front of The Times the next day which Andy Murray was pictured reading!

That's brilliant Iona.  Thanks for posting. Smile  I zoomed out to 33% and got the whole pic in, but who wants to do that!  The bigger the better, especially as the expressions on the faces of the spectators sum it all up.   Well done to Julian Finney!

Great pic, and I like the way they've got the exact timing, although I'm not sure just how they managed to work that out down to the last second.
