Following on from Torin's comparison, the link below shows that Federer won his first GS after playing 17 times. Andy is on his 15th GS so it is anytime imminently. Either at the USO this year or the AO next year. This is exciting stuff

Murray targets number one ranking

Andy and Fed have been neck and neck the whole way up the rankings in terms of 'youngest to be ranked x' terms; Fed was slightly ahead until they hit the top 25, then Murray was slightly ahead until they hit the top 3.
I think that if Andy wins today, then wins next week, then wins the US Open then he's guaranteed to hit number 1 on 14/09/2009, which would be 41 days younger than Fed was? (Assuming Fed doesn't enter New Haven, which he won't.) (And obviously that's a big if.)

Fairly certain it was the 18th attempt for Federer.

If Murray beats Fed in the semi and goes on to win Cincy, what will their respective pts totals be?

If Murray beats Fed in the SF and goes on to win in Cincy the rankings will be:
Fed 11,400
Murray 10,250
Then when you eliminate the ranking points from last year's USO the points will be:
Fed 9,410
Murray 8,860
If Andy wins in Cincy and wants to gain the number one ranking after the USO he would need to do the following at Flushing Meadows:
Fed loses in Rounds 1, 2 or 3 - Andy needs to make the SF
Fed loses in Round 4 (last 16) or QF - Andy needs to make the Final
Fed loses in SF or Final - Andy needs to win USO
Getting slightly ahead of ourselves I know, but there's no harm in hoping!!
10 more wins in a row (3 in Cincy and 7 in NY) and Andy is a grand slam champion and world number 1!!! Bring it on!!

Good post. By the way, the totals you give for when you remove last years US Open points are adding ten points for a first round loss this year, which isn't guaranteed if one is injured! But it doesn't make the slightest difference...

Yep, spot on Yamor - had pre-populated this year's USO with R128 on your spreadsheet when I was working the rankings.
Presume there's still no clarification in relation to the 4 x 500 event rules and how they are going to be implemented as yet? It will be interesting to analyse the ranking point possibilities for the remainder of the season, particularly with Andy losing 500 for St Petersburg last year, as well as the win at Madrid and the SF in Shanghai.
With all those points to drop off, it'll be a tall order to retain whatever position he ends up in after Flushing Meadows, particularly when Fed didn't qualify out of the group in Shanghai and Rafa didn't play there at all.

There actually is clarification about the four 500 events needed. Federer and Blake who have only played one such event have received a zero-pointer already because there are only two more weeks they could play 500 events this year.
My only real question remaining is whether the necessity to play a 500 event after the US Open means that has to count towards players' totals even at the expense of a higher result from earlier in the year.
In other words, is the requirement just to
play
one 500 event from after the USO, or also to
count
a 500 event from after the USO.

Just checked the ATP site and it seems that you only have to play one 500 event after the USO but can count the 4 best 500 events irrespective of what time of year they were played:
"In 2009, any player who finished in the 2008 year-end Top 30 will be required to compete in four Grand Slam tournaments and eight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. In addition,
the Best 4 ATP World Tour 500 and Best 2 other events (ATP World Tour 250 and Challengers) will be counted towards a player's ranking.
Top 30 players (based on '08 year-end ranking) must play a minimum of four 500 level tournaments during the calendar year, including at least one event following the US Open (Monte Carlo Masters 1000 event will count towards the minimum of four and all penalties apply):
-- A 0-pointer for each event less than four played.
-- A 0-pointer for withdrawing from any 500 tournament after the acceptance list is out.
-- A 0-pointer for not playing at least one event after the US Open.
-- A 0-pointer can be appealed by a player to the same tribunal formed to hear 1000 suspension appeals.
-- No suspensions or fines (including no withdrawal and late withdrawal fines)".

Yes, that does seem to be the case, and I believe that's what will happen. However if you look in the ATP rulebook in the section about this rule, it seems to say that it does have to be counted. (Although it is technically possible to explain the wording either way.)

check out Nadals points. he has points for 2 x 500 events plus Monte Carlo + Davis Cup(witch like MC counts as 500) so he already has 4 x 500 event points. So you would think if its best 4 before US then it should be after. The at least 1 after US is a contractual thing (games to be played by top 32) not a points system thing as far as I can see.

I actually do agree with you that it's just a requirement to play it, however the wording of the rulebook strongly suggests the opposite.
I don't think Nadal's points are proof, since the requirement to play four 500's and the requirement to play one after the US Open are unrelated, so at this moment when the second requirement has not come into force yet, you can certainly count four 500's.
It could also be that even if you do have to count the post-USO 500, Davis Cup points could be an exception, for two reasons:
1) like it doesn't count towards the requirement to play four 500's, and yet can still count as a 500 result, maybe it can also count instead of the post-USO 500.
2) there is a round of the Davis Cup played after the US Open, so it may be allowed to take the place of the post-USO 500 in the rankings.

Thanks for the info. I am just focusing on Andy at the moment.
My understanding is that Andy has got 3 events that can be counted towards his "500" which is Monte Carlo + 2 "500" events. I assume this means that Andy only needs to play 1 more 500 event (e.g. Basel?) to complete his set of 4 ?
