You say it's the Telegraph but you link to an article from The Times.

Someone's mentioned it already, but as a reminder - it's vital Del Potro loses his semi. If he wins it, he'll definitely overtake Andy in time for the Australian Open seedings, meaning Andy won't be a top-4 seed, and could meet a top-4 player in the quarters.

Also, that Times headline makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Sounds like Rafa's the sub-editor.

The Times - particularly the sport - hasn't been a well-written paper for many years. Any paper employing the toe-curling Simon Barnes and the vastly overrated Hugh McIlvanney needs to look closely at itself.

Andy is now ranked 5th. He will return to 4th in a week's time. After that, the rankings next get updated the day after the Australian Open final. He could then be ranked anywhere between 2-6.
For Davydenko to overtake Andy, Davydenko has to win the tournament, and hope Andy doesn't reach the QF.
For Del Potro to re-overtake Andy, Del Potro has to do one of the following:
1) reach the SF, and hope Andy doesn't reach the QF
2) reach the F, and hope Andy doesn't reach the F
3) win the competition
For Andy to overtake Djokovic, Andy has to win the tournament, and hope that Djokovic does not reach the SF.
For Andy to overtake Nadal, Andy has to do one of the following:
1) reach the SF, and hope that Nadal pulls out of the competition*
2) reach the F, and hope that Nadal doesn't reach the SF
3) win the competition
*actually, according to the ATP rules, even if Nadal were to play and lose his first round match, Andy would overtake him in this scenario. However, last year the ATP did not follow this rule, even though it was written in the rulebook.
