Thanks folks. He's been 2nd before but this would really put a stamp on it. On the basis of what we've seen he can consider himself world number 2 right now.

The wheels would have appeared to come off the Djokovich and Del Potro bandwagons

Both Djokovic and Del Potro have lost due to being physically unfit (upset stomach, painful wrist)
If Andy wins then he will be a deserved #2 in the world this time round although that is still a long way to go.

Hey guys im just curious about this nadal being 4th thing. I looked at the points and I didn't think nadal dropped enough points or that murray has gained enough (yet) for nadal to be 4th. Could someone show me the workings out of it since i'm obviously a bit crap at this lol

I don't have the workings, but if you use the rankings spreadsheet that Yamor made (link is on the frontpage), then it projects Murray to pass Nadal if he made the final.
Nadal drops (2000-360) = 1640 points?
Murray gains (1200 at least - 180) = 1180 points?
So Andy gains 2820 points on Rafa, and there is roughly 2,500 points separating them.

Heard Andy would drop back to #3 if wins the AO since he's not playing Rotterdam. Is there any truth in this?

Yes, but he will almost definitely return to number 2 within two weeks.

To expand:
If Andy wins on Sunday, he will be 290 points ahead of Djokovic in the rankings issued on 1st Feb.
On the 15th Feb, Andy will lose 500 points from Rotterdam last year, so he'll be 210 points behind Djokovic.
However, Andy plays Marseille (250) and Dubai (500) the two weeks after the 15th, and almost everything he earns there will get added to his ranking points.

Kenneth, if you look at Andy's 2010 schedule above, you can see that Andy will be participating in the 4 tournaments that qualify to count as his four "500" series events.
They are : Monte Carlo (MS1000), Dubai (500), Tokyo (500), Valencia (500)
What this means is that Andy will get his points later on whereas Djokovic can obtain his points earlier. The advantage of Djokovic schedule is that if he doesn't do well in Rotterdam, he can participate in an additional 500 series event later to get more points by choosing the best 4 "500" events.
I feel all this pales into insignificance as Andy strives for GS honours this year. It becomes of little importance whether he ends the year as #2, #3 or #4th ranked as long as he gets at least 1 GS to his name.
Sidenote :
========
There are 9 MS1000 events where the other 8 (not Monte Carlo) count as Mandatory Master Series events that all players who could qualify must play in (otherwise they get 0 point and count towards the 18 annual events).
The Monte Carlo is a bonus MS1000 event that is not mandatory but it makes sense to play in because it counts as a "500" series event but you could end up with 1000 points if you win it.

I just noticed that Andy's schedule this year is not very well planned and has too many back to back tournaments :
Marseille, Dubai
FO, Queens (no choice. It is like this every year)
Toronto, Cincinnati (again no choice. It is like this every year)
Tokyo, Shanghai
Valencia, Paris
The problem with back to back tournaments is that once Andy has won the first tournament, his over exertion will likely prevent him from winning the follow up tournament.
Can anyone who is familiar with the ATP tour event dates suggest alternative tournaments to minimise back to back tournaments please ? Thanks.

Another game that I like playing by myself is to count the maximum number of points a player can gain in 1 year
GS : 4 x 2000 = 8000
MS: 8 x 1000 = 8000
"500" Series = 2500 (Monte Carlo (1000) + 3 x 500
"250" Series = 500 (2 x 250)
WTF = 1500 (for the top 8 players who qualify for the world tour final)
====================
MaxTotal =20,500 points ! or 20,800 points in an Olympic year (replace a 500 pointer with 800 points for the Olympic)
Nadal at his peak coming into the FO last year had >14,000 points when he was then the current holder of FO, Wimbledon, AO, as well as Olympic Champion !
It is extremely difficult to get close to the maximum points because you lose 40% of the points if you "only" get to the final.

You are welcome Kenneth. There are many who know more than I do like Yamor and Allan so we are all learning
. I also hope Andy will win at least another 2 MS and 1 or 2 GS this year.
