What's to defend at the WTF? Not much.
Yeah, I'm really hoping he gains there. Djokovic doesn't have much to defend either though, Fed won so he's obviously most likely to get hit. Djokovic will probably be favourite to go world no1 after the WTF, Fed has also got Paris and Basel wins to get hit by as well. Unfortunately Murray's got the Shanghai win to get hit by before the WTF as well, Djokovic didn't do anything there either.
Basically Djokovic is most likely to be the world no.1 at the end of this year.

Think for him to stand a chance to be number 1 by the end of this year he will need to win the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai (1000),ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris (1000) & the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (1500).
That is tall order for him and even then there is no guarantee that he would be world number 1 after doing all that. Dont even think its worth playing Bangkok (250) or Tokyo (500).Better focusing on the big 3 tournaments that are left.
Think more likely outcome is that he wins 1 or 2 of the big 3 events that are left and then wins the Oz Open next year to become number 1.Even doing that he could still be behind Novak Djokovic after the Oz Open. Then mind if he could just get to a few semi finals/finals etc of some Clay Court Masters then I would say he would be number 1 around March 2013

8,570 ranking points. Has he ever had so many at one time? I'm guessing not!

Murray's defending nearly 2000 points before then, whilst Federer is defending 1500 points before the WTF and another 1500 at the WTF.
Djokovic has barely anything to defend between now and the end of the season.

I'm sure he was 9000+ in 2009 at one point. Will have a look.
Ye he had 9450 points after Wimbledon 2009:

I think it's going to be all downhill for Nadal when it gets to the clay season and all uphill for Andy

Miles ahead of Daveed now and only 100 points behind Rafa in YTD rankings. Means he should stay and finish comfortably ahead of Rafa now.

To be honest (and this isn't my usual Eeyeore on barbiturates impression) I expect something of a slump between now and the WTF. He's achieved his ultimate goal - and it'll take a little while to really set some new targets.
That's fine and perfectly human. Next year is going to be incredible!

Andy has a real chance of being No.1 by the end of the next clay court season - or after Queens. These are the points being defended between 1st Jan and Wimby:
Rafa 6,600
Joker 6,120
Fed 4,845
Andy 2,510
