Well he did have a bad back injury last year bignose and as you say he proved the previous year that he could do better than that.  Paul Newman has traced a not totally inplausible scenario for how he could be number 1 before USO.  However, I think I prefer to concentrate on enjoying him being number 2 and allow him to consolidate that position for the time being rather than worry about number 1.
From what I've read, I don't think Andy's in a rush to get to No.1.  He's certainly set himself that goal but seems to realistic about his chances of achieving it this year.

I'm just glad he won a masters event after so long, don't underestimate the huge confidence boost this will be to him mentally for the clay season, in fact i would go as far to say that a lot of pressure has been lifted off his shoulders and I would now expect him to have quite a fruitful couple of months.

I did pick him to win the French open this year, which is probably asking too much, but he will be considered a very dark horse for that tournament.

Could be the springboard that the Olympics was last year!

Hope so, and who knows..?

He's got a clay court specialist in his corner.

Here are the Skybet odds for the French. The draw will be key. Ferrer in the semis would give him a decent chance. But he'd need luck to avoid  Nadal/Delpo/Berdych etc before then.

Rafael Nadal 5/6
Novak Djokovic 13/8
Andy Murray 8/1
Roger Federer 14/1
Juan Martin Del Potro 14/1
David Ferrer 20/1
Tomas Berdych 40/1
Jo Wilfried Tsonga 66/1
Nicolas Almagro 80/1
Milos Raonic 100/1
Richard Gasquet 100/1

I'm amazed that Skybet have him as a bigger favourite than Federer to win the French Open, given Murray's total lack of success on that surface. Federer may not be having a great season so far but you would have to favour him over Murray on clay, unless Murray shows huge improvements on last year.

Absolutely. At these odds I wouldn't be backing Andy. They seem to be assuming Andy will improve greatly this year with Fed tailing off a bit. Delpo at 14-1 looks a decent punt but ultimately I can't see past Rafa or Joker.

Don't forget betting odds aren't just about how likely it is something will happen.  It's about how likely people are to bet on something happening, as well as encouraging people to bet in the first place.  They may know some will bet on Andy regardless, so why give long odd, and they may also think people are more likely to bet if they see shorter odds, assuming that means he has a good chance.

I think with Andy, there is a lot of uncertainty as to how he'll play this clay season.  It is possible he'll lift his game and there is a risk (to the bookies) he could end up doing really well.  With Fed, he is perhaps more predictable, so while many might think he'll do better than Andy, few think he's got a realistic chance of actually winning the whole tournament.

Really?  Ferrer beat him in 4 in the QF last year.  The second set went to a TB which Andy won, but it was downhill after that.  It'll be interesting to see how he fares against Ferrer though if they meet before RG.  I don't think Ferrer will be forgetting Miami in a hurry.

Murray has been 3rd favourite for RG since Shanghai last year.

The calculated probability of AM winning the French is not once in 9 attempts. It is of course higher than that, which is how the bookies make their money. The bookies always offer shorter odds than calculated by their actuaries. (Anyone who gambles is throwing their money away).
