Murray's Ranking

Quote

That is tall order for him and even then there is no guarantee that he would be world number 1 after doing all that. Dont even think its worth playing Bangkok (250) or Tokyo (500).Better focusing on the big 3 tournaments that are left.

Agreed. I think he should just play the 3 remaining Masters events. And winning the big year end finals tournament at the O2 would be the perfect end to the year and bag him 1500 points.
He wont be number 1. That's for next year. He lost too many points in the 4 American hard-court Masters.

There's only two remaining Masters.

Bugger the rankings. To my mind, he's now the best player in the world.

Grabcopy you're in good company as at start of match Johnnie Mac said whoever won USO could claim to be best in world right now and I think Andy especially given the Olympic gold.  Can't remember exactly now after 5 hours on the roller coaster yesterday!

Oh and boogers for once I agree with you.  A bit of a slump would be perfectly understandable now as Andy comes to terms with his new status.  But provided his back holds out [and remember those injections must be due to wear off some time this Autumn I think] I'm sure he'll aim to try to win at the 02.

Lendl spoke about how he hoped Andy wouldn't go into a slump and would get another major more quickly than he did. Maybe he can help Andy though with the mind-set and how to handle this since he has been through it himself and he could help prevent that from happening.

Here's something that made me look forward to 2013:

I have a feeling 2013 is going to be pretty exciting for Murray fans Smile

To aim for no.2 by season's end might be possible. I'm more interested in 3rd time lucky at the AO...

Think he will only play the big 3 tournies left + maybe Tokyo.  If he's going all the way out East might as well as do Japan as well as China Masters.  Only other likely tourney is Basel - wouldn't it be just great to beat The Smugman in his own backyard!

Andy is scheduled to play 5 more tournaments this year: Tokyo 500, Shanghai 1000, Basel 500, Paris 1000 and World Tour Finals London 1500

Here's the rankings for 2012 only (formerly called the ATP race):

1. Djokovic  9910
2. Federer   8905
3. Nadal      6840
4. Murray     6730

So Murray still has to gain more points than Nadal to finish no.3 in the year end rankings. That should happen given Andy's form and Rafa's injuries but it looks very unlikely that Andy will catch Federer this year.

So, 4500 points left on the table in those 5 tournies?
Andy said his next goal was to go for the #1 ranking.

And he is the Olympic Gold winner, USO Slam Champ, and currently the best player in the whole wide world.. Whistle

Id be amazed if he plays Basle.  Tokyo would make sense. Its a good warm-up for Shanghai where he's unbeaten for 2 years.

I still can't believe he's won a Slam. Its unreal. The news in Scotland just now is about nothing else. There were fans at the Scotland game at Hampden last night wearing Andy Murray masks. And BBC went live to a pub beside Hampden just before kick-off and the Tartan Army were singing "There's only one Andy Murray". Crazy.

I enclose an image but cannot see it in the preview. It shows the points trend this yr
Nice steady progress by Andy. All top 4 getting much closer in the points spread.
#1 spot could all come down to London.

I don't think Djokovic or Federer will like the prospect of Andy getting to No.1 so I think they're going to try hard to keep ranking points themselves and play a lot of tournaments.

Andy is currently down to play Tokyo - if so, Sky better well show it this year.  An enduring memory of 2011 is setting the alarm for 4am and watching a live stream when Andy thrashed Rafa, losing just 4 points in the final set!
