Murray's Ranking

Quote

While I completely agree with you guys-I would absolutely love a WTF win-I don't think we need to worry too much.Andy himself has said he really wants to play well at the WTF this year, that he wants to do better there this year than he has  other years. He and his team won't be leaving things to chance or overlooking them.I remember him saying that one of the things that Lendl had brought to the table is that he's very good at knowing how to schedule the tournaments.Looks like we're just going to have to trust to Andy and his team to know what they're doing!

My understanding of Andy's schedule in his push to close in on the #1 ranking is as followed :

Tokyo      :   1/10/12 Singles & Doubles     500 points
Shanghai :   7/10/12 Singles                   1000 points
Basel       : 22/10/12 Singles                     500 points
Paris        : 29/10/12 Singles                   1000 points
WTF        :   5/11/12 Singles                    1500 points
==================================
Total points                                             4500 points

I hope Andy will skip Basel to allow his body to recover and play well at WTF.

If Andy can gain about 2000 points to reach a total of ~9000 for this year, it will put him in a good position to strive for the #1 ranking in Q1 next year.

Thank you so much for the information Philip. You made it easier for me..

Now, wouldn't that just be a beautiful thing? Thanks Philip.

Andy will stay at 3 this year, be 2 after Miami, and 1 after Queens!!

A few of the pundits were saying after the USO that if things continue to go well for Andy he could realistically get to No.1 in the world in March next year. Does that make sense?

It does. If Andy earns 2000 out of the possible 4500 points possible (for the 5 tournaments he plans to enter) by year end, he will be around 9000 points. If Andy wins the AO, he will gain 1280 to get to ~10000 points. With one or two MS wins (1000 each) Andy will be around between 11,000 to 12,000 points and should achieve the #1 ranking by end March.

This won't be easy.  Maybe Andy needs a few good results at the clay court Master Series (Apr to May) to make it to the top.

There is another unthinkable / highly improbable scenario. If Andy wins all 5 tournaments, Andy can get to 11,200 by year end and could achieve the #1 ranking if other results go his way.

Thanks for that Philip. It's worth having some idea of what Andy needs to do to get to number one. I have a feeling Andy's clay season will be better next year, if he is fit. I think his back was the issue on the clay this year.

Murray has now moved ahead of Nadal to third in the ATP Race

Next stop, Federer.

Incredible clay court season for Nadal that Andy needed a fantastic 3 extra summer months just to catch up (+50% time).

Not really. Getting ahead of ourselves would mean that we are saying he will do it. No one is saying that. However, I think it's good to have some idea of what Andy needs to do to do it. He's got his work cut out, clearly, but it's possible.
