The next few months are important, this is where he can pick up the most points this year as last years clay season was not great for him. IW could be a major points gain and lets hope he has a decent run in Miami to at least match last years final appearance.
Then the clay season is where he could really do some catching up finishing with RG where he only has to defend QF points so a semi or even the final would be nice.

Federer follows up his Rotterdam QF exit to Benneteau with a Dubai SF exit to Berdych.
Was defending 1000 points, defended only 270 of them.
Andy will lose 300 points on Monday, but Federer will lose a further 320.
Gap is down to 1355. Andy is defending 10 points from IW, Federer 1000. This is getting interesting.
Meanwhile Novak will extend his lead to over 3700 points if he wins tomorrow.

For Murray to become #2 after IW:
Win IW. Doesn't matter what Federer does.
Reach the final; Federer goes out in QFs or before.
Even if he doesn't catch him, he has a huge chance to significantly close the gap here. Really needs a good tournament, no more first game defeat crap.
However it is worth nothing that whatever happens, it might be short-lived with Murray defending 600 from Miami (Federer will lose 90). Although he will be 2nd seed.
