^ Same doubt Angie. Fed is 9535 points. How can Andy overtake him by just winning the Indian Wells?

No zarf, fed is on 8545 and our Andy is on 8180. Someone on previous page has posted the latest rankings so if fed goes out in quarters and Andy wins he can overtake Smile

It's simple, Federer is the defending champion here, so he will lose 1000 (990) points. Andy is only defending a R2 exit from last year (10 points).

These are their points at the start of the tournament after subtracting their points from last year:

Federer: 8545
Murray: 8180

If Andy wins the tournament and Federer reaches the final, it will look like this:

Murray: 9170
Federer: 8935

If Andy reaches the final and Federer loses before the semis:

Murray: 8770
Federer: 8545-8715

Any other result and Federer keeps his ranking.

Well I don't think Murray himself really cares that much about reaching no. 2, it's not specifically something he's aiming to make happen; only getting to no. 1 will be considered a worthy achievement for him to be proud about.

The rankings are almost irrelevant - if he wins the tournaments the rankings will come with it.

Yes but he'll have to get to No.2 first.

and one advantage of being #2 is that he wouldn't have to face Nole until a final

I think he bothers, (but he would't say if it is....) being #2 (like this draw IW) meens playing against Nole only in the finals....

And he also has the chance of facing Ferrer in a potential semi final instead of Federer (or Djokovic as you mentioned). I generally agree though that Andy's focus is on winning events. The ranking will take care of itself if he does well.

Great explanation Silver Lining. I know that it's the winning that counts but I find the statistics endlessly  fascinating.

Absolutely it’s very important to move up to #2. There is no difference between 3 and 4, or 5 and 6, Only ego!!  But it dictates the rank of the players you meet during the tournament and when you meet them.

Getting to no2 is vital for Murray He'd get an increase in appearance money and better courts  plus more evening slots for his matches. Then of course he would'nt have to face Federer or  Nadal and Djokovic. Yes I can't wait for him to reach no 2 ranking.
As a final thought, although Andy holds the record of being the only Brit to reach no2 position which he held for a month I think it was in 2009, if he were to hold this for longer it would perhaps stop John Lloyd's patronising remarks re Murray's progress
