Masters have always existed in one form or another. I remember back in the day, they were known as the Mercedes Super 9. It's just that, these days, there are only realistically four players who can win them.

Delpo no. Didn't Bersh*t win Paris when he was young, maybe 2007.  Tsonga won Paris 2008.  The top 4 have won 88% of the biggest titles in last 5/6 years i.e. Slams, Masters, WTF, Olympics

Paris seems to be the one where the lower players get their chance, probably because the big guys are saving themselves for the Tour Finals.
I believe Berdych won Paris in 2005, Davydenko in 2006 (though he did also win Miami 2008 and the Tour Finals in 2009), Tsonga 2008, Soderling in 2009 (?) - any more?

It's been barren for the also-rans otherwise - though didn't Ljubicic win IW in the not too distant past?

Oops, Soderling won Paris in 2010, Djoko got it in 2009. Federer won in 2011, the year that he decided to finish strongly and take back No 1 while the others were knackered.

Even Henners won it in 2003! No offence to all those past winners, but it seems like a pretty crap Masters event, no doubt not helped by its position at the fag-end of the main calendar and just before the Tour Finals.

Not sure what I was on about there re: Frauderer. It seems his late-2011 run enabled him to take No 3 back from Andy - that's probably what pissed me off about it!

In some ways, Masters titles are a truer reflection of sustained quality than slams.

I can't justify that, cos I've had a bottle of Shiraz. But, do you know what I mean?

Good job it's not in the bank because he'd lose everything or at least 60% if they went under

I get you - 9 per year rather than 4, 3 on clay and the rest on hard (indoor and out). It's a shame they can't find time for a grass Masters.

Queens? Halle? Yes, it devalues grass not to have a Masters. There's not even a grass 500, for God's sake.

Posted this on the match report thread, probably more relevant here:

Also worth nothing the 'Race' rankings (current points gained in 2013):

(These include Miami scores that I've added on myself in my head.. so possible/probable mathematical errors for a couple of them)

1 Djokovic 2990 (5 tournaments)
2 Murray 2630 (4 tournaments)
3 Ferrer 2370 (8 tournaments)
4 Nadal 1900 (5 tournaments)
5 Berdych 1550 (7 tournaments)
6 Del Potro 1425 (7 tournaments)
7 Gasquet 1215 (8 tournaments)

...

8 Federer 1170 (5 tournaments)

How many points is Andy defending over the next two months at Monte Carli, Madrid and Rome?
