Ultimately he doesn't have to play 6 'small' events - it just means he misses out on potential ranking points. The top four usually don't fill that quota, instead focusing on the big ones - Masters and Slams.

I suspect Andy will play Brisbane, Queens, Monte Carlo, Tokyo and possibly Basel (signed up for last two years, withdrawn both times), but that's it. Focus is definitely on the big tournaments this year, with the smaller ones just warm-ups.

Can anyone tell me how many points Andy picked up last clay season - ie how many he has to defend this year?

Not read this yet but here's Paul Newman's thoughts on how Andy can make it to number 1 this year:

Oddly the ATP have him and Federer having played six:

For some reason Miami is included for both. I guess it's tournament's counted in their ranking, so as Miami and Australian Open (Rafa) are mandatory they are included even though they didn't play.

It is a bit confusing - look at Nadal's ranking (not the race) and he's down as having played 20 tournaments (Andy at 19!), although he didn't play in 9 of them. He also has zeros for Valencia and Beijing, but other non-countable points - presumably not enough 500s played.

MC 180, Barcelona 90, Madrid 0, Rome 90, French 360.

Edit! http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Top-Players/Andy-Murray.aspx?t=rb

and to compare with the rest of the top 5, there's this amazing chart:

Andy is the blue block. Figures below the chart show points gained this year in blue, points dropped/to drop in red.

All this is too complicated for me so I am going to go one tournament at a time, one match at a time and enjoy Andy's new status as no 2 in the world

I can't see Andy ever making world number 1 unless he improves his results on the red dirt. Last year was a disappointment given how the previous year he showed a huge improvement. Maybe now he is a Slam winner he'll be more confident on this most bizarre of surfaces.

I think he'll have a decent clay court season this time and totally looking forward to it.

I like to think that last year was the aberration, so expect him to do better this year.  We know he was troubled with injuries during the clay season, so unless he's similarly troubled, he should be gaining points.  Whether he can gain enough points to make him a serious contender for #1 is another matter, but a lot will depend on Nole too.  If he has a strong clay season, then Andy will need his best clay season to date, but if continues to be fallible, then he might get away with a decent clay season.

We know it's something he and Ivan are keen to work on, but it may take some time.  Personally, I don't think Andy should try to force his clay game too much, because I want him fresh for the grass season.  I'd probably be happy with Andy consistently reaching semi-finals and avoiding injury and fatigue.

Well he did have a bad back injury last year bignose and as you say he proved the previous year that he could do better than that.  Paul Newman has traced a not totally inplausible scenario for how he could be number 1 before USO.  However, I think I prefer to concentrate on enjoying him being number 2 and allow him to consolidate that position for the time being rather than worry about number 1.
