Being 45th seed would make things a bit difficult, it's true.

I've got to agree with the sentiment that Nadal may yet struggle on the hard-courts.  Whether it's injury, or just because he's not as good on hard (but blamed on the knee) will be hard to tell, but relatively speaking, the faster hardcourts are where Andy and Roger have traditionally had the edge.

I have said before on this topic that if Nadal finds grass difficult because of his knees how id he going to cope on hard courts. It begs the question is he only going to play on clay ? Is he going to be allowed to not play on hardcourt. I thought he had to participate in the slams it is an interesting question.

Andy Murray - US Open and Wimbledon champion! :)

Katie I think a lot will depend on Rafa being fit. I still don't buy that he will be able to play on the hard courts for long. His movement was dreadful in the first round at Wimbledon. Imagine what it will be like at Cinci or Montreal, or worse, the USO. Rafa might be able to gain a lot of points, but he'll need to be able to play to do it.

That's a good point Teejay. His knees seemed fine at Indian Wells though so perhaps after he's had a break, he'll be ready to go again on the hardcourts? He usually plays well in Canada and loses early in Cinci so it'll be interesting to see which (if any) he chooses to play this time.

Perhaps, but he'll struggle to ever be #1 at all (let alone for a sustained period of time) if he continues to drop 4000+ points (from the mandatory events) every clay season.
Roddick did it. Sampras did it. Andy will have even less points to defend next year clay.

I don't think the grass itself had a chance to do any damage to Nadal's knees.  He just struggled with the lower bounce (and his pre-existing knee problem).  The hard courts at Indian Wells had a high bounce, so easier for him than grass.

They weren't in an era with two players picking up the majority of the clay points.

Nice victory for Andy today. Thats an 800 points improvement.
If he wins Toronto and retains the USO could he be number 1?

Can't believe he isn't world no. 1 but it really doesn't matter. He has a lot better chance of getting to it now though.

Don't think so - he'd probably have to win Shanghai and the WTF to have a chance - even then he'll probably have to wait until next year's clay court season - unless Djoker's form collapses during the rest of 2013.

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

It's an 800 points improvement, but it's also a 480-point improvement for the Djoker!

Djokovic said he was going to take a break in his interview after, I'm not sure if that means he's going to skip some of the masters? If he does though Andy can maybe close the margin some more.

Nah, probably just a break from training for a week or two before the hard court season.

The 800 net gain just about covers the 750 he'll lose for Olympics. He's defending 2000 at the USO but then he also has lots to gain at Rogers Cup and Cinci.

Gains 2000 points on Rafa though, so that will help in the fight for #2. Unfortunately Rafa gained over 4000 points on Andy during the clay season!

Will now break the 9000 points barrier (9300+ actually). Is this the most ranking points he's ever had? I think he broke 9000 in 2009 as well, which is ridiculous considering he didn't make a single slam final that year, let alone win two! Although that ranking did include USO final points from 2008.

It helps a lot for keeping Ferrer off his back, they are now even in points for the US Open race and let's face it Andy should hopefully be better on hard-courts.
