Courage doesn't always roar - but wins Wimbledon

I think you are right tj.    Andy should not have been so affected by the noise etc. but I did have the feeling that things were against him.     One problem is distracting but when you add in others, including the umpire's decision, it becomes too much.    Even Berdych said he found the loud music distracting and I would hazard a guess that he is a less sensitive soul than our Andy.

Both were distracted by the noise. Andy, in my view, should have thrown his ranking weight about and had the referee out.  Even Mark Petchey thought the noise level was too much.

I don't think it was just that though. If Andy had been at his best they could have had a marching band on the court and Andy would have found a way through.

At the end of the day it really came down to a few bad points at the wrong time. I don't think it would be an issue in a best of five.

I don't think it helped either that Andy is preparing to defend a 'Championship  title' for the first time! He must be a bag of nerves.  Still.....the calming influence of Mr. Lendl will help! Hope he gets to Flushing Meadows soon!

That's a fair point. I will be glad to see Andy get a match or two in the bag. I think he will then relax and see it purely as a major he's trying to win, rather than a major he's trying to defend.

I'm sure Lendl's experience will help Andy in the days and weeks ahead. He's helped Andy believe in himself, which I think is half the battle. I'm sure when things get going Andy will be fine.

One positive to come out of Andy losing in the quarters is that there was no risk of him losing to either Rafa or Roger in the semis - which would have been pretty demoralising just before the USO.  Every cloud has a silver lining!

Andy will get it back by year end. No sweat. As for Nadal, someone tell him to go boil his head.

I feel like being immature and mean-spirited now.

I really don't think Andy expected this. Rafa pulled a master stroke here, he has never tried in cincy before he normally tanks or pulls out 'injured'. This year he knew exactly what he wanted to do and it worked out perfectly for him.

Nadal has NO points to defend, andy has 2000 slam points to degend as well as 600 from shanghai Final... i really do not see how Andy will get it back year end 'no sweat' when he is playing awfil at the masters tournaments.

Please,  Andy never underestimates Rafa.           He knew he had the chance to hold the number 2 ranking but his mind was already in NY.

It's a real shame about the number 2 ranking. If only Andy hadn't lost to Gulbis last week...

I really hope Andy is shown the respect he deserves in New York.  The warm-up sideshows in Montreal and Cincinnati have gone out on a limb to big up 'Rafa and Roger' to a nauseating extent.  The Montreal website banner was a disgrace - even when 'Roger' failed to show they quickly replaced him with Raonic, not Andy.  For an official ATP Masters tournament to exclude the reigning US, Olympic and Wimbledon champion so blatantly beggars belief.

Unbelievably, things got worse in Cincinnati when they shunted the Murray/Berdych quarter-final out on the ridiculous disco wasteland that is Grandstand.  Friday's order of play made depressing reading, with every top player, male and female, all playing on Centre Court while Andy and Tomas were unceremoniously wheeled out like poor relations to perform in front of a pathetic, apathetic, gathering of spectators on the Z-list neighbouring court.  The atmosphere swung from graveyard to nightclub with the rhythm of the 'bigger' matches being played out next door

And it wasn't just the pop music.  We were also bombarded with the thumping announcements of the hysterical PA system - regardless of the timing, and ignorant to the sensitivities and dignity of the players doing their best in truly horrendous conditions.  The reigning US, Olympic and Wimbledon champion, in an always-compelling contest with the world No 6, found himself sandwiched between two doubles and one relatively low-ranked ladies' match.

It was never gonna be easy but, boy, it got a whole tougher in that dire stadium.  I felt embarrassed for both players, they deserved so much more.  I know all about Sky wanting to show Andy's matches at peak times, but this just didn't feel right.  For him to have achieved his pinnacle success only a few weeks ago in the impeccable surroundings of Centre Court at Wimbledon and then come out to that dead and alive hole just seemed sad.  There was a bad vibe and I wasn't surprised or sorry to see Andy lose.

No wonder he got the first flight out and headed for the Big Apple.  Onwards and upwards Andy. wub

Clementine as much as it pains me to say this; Andy doesn't draw as much money as Fed and Nadal do hence why he is on adverts less than they are... even world number 1 and 6x slam winner djokovic is less comercialised than Fedal...
