The penalties really are pointless in more ways than one because they don't really affect the players that don't play many tournaments and the players that do play lots of tournaments will cover the criteria set and not get the penalty.

So yeah I'm not sure exactly why they even exist...

^^ haha, had a lovely holiday, thanks all. No jabs required.

Thanks Ruthie , but if laundry @5.04 is correct then I've got it wrong. I don't think Slam or Masters 1,000s (except for MC) points can be replaced by points gained at lower tournies.  If they could, why would Nadal have so many 0 points, but also non - countables? See http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Top-Players/Rafael-Nadal.aspx?t=rb

I do agree though that point penalties aren't that relevant to top players as they don't play so many tournaments, and don't have many non-countables

Yes I got it wrong, the grandslams and masters count as automatic 0-pointers when you miss them so Andy would need to keep the French - it means Rome would come off 1st then one of his 90 scores from a masters would come off next if he scored higher than that.

Nadal's points work out weird at the moment, they mean if Nadal goes out 1st round at the US Open even then he will gain 150 points to his current ranking as his Vina del Mar points will then be counted.

I give up.  Like Andy I think I'll try and ignore the niceties of the ranking system and concentrate on him winning the big ones.

The ranking system works fine. Its pretty accurate in telling us who the top players arewhich is what its supposed to do. Andy is ranked the 3rd best player in the world which is the right

actually the ranking system tells you who is the best player over last 12 months not necessarily who is playing best right now.  But I wasn't complaining about how it ranks people - just that it's so incredibly complicated for a mere mortal to understand.

I agree Ruthie, a waste of brain cells trying to work it out.  I will continue to watch Andy and support him irrespective of where he is in the rankings.  He is so confident these days its a pleasure seeing him.

Haha - just read this:

Happy 40th birthday, ATP computer rankings

The ATP computer rankings made their debut on Aug. 23, 1973
"It became very important in the history of the ATP," says Raymond Moore, the first administrator
Four decades in, the computer rankings are indispensable, providing clarity and coherence.

Laundry @ 5.31am! Sorry, still don't agree - don't think Masters points can be replaced by other tournaments, except for MC which is not mandatory.

'Clarity and coherence'. Right, if you have a degree in maths, physics and stuff like that!

I understand the principle of the rankings, the idea of defending points from one year to another and so on. Anything beyond that is a total blur to me, so I let it go over my head.
