Rogers Cup QF: Andy Murray vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga « on: August 08, 2014, 04:07 AM »

After getting a w/o over against Richard Gasquet, Murray now faces Tsonga, a familiar opponent against whom he has a 9-1 H2H record and who comes off the back of a comprehensive defeat of a lacklustre Djokovic.  The two have met twice before this season, first in the Mubadala WTC, which was Murray's first match after his return from back surgery and which he lost 7-5, 6-3, and later in Miami where he turned the tables, defeating Tsonga 6-4, 6-1.

The match is scheduled for 6pm BST.

More of the same from Wednesday in terms of how well the serve was working to get more cheap points would be superb.  I just hope that wasn't a flash in the pan.

^ It's a little unfortunate Gasquet withdrew because I'm sure Andy would have benefited from some more match practice, particularly against a much more experienced player than Kyrgios.

The first thing that I thought about when I heard Gasquet had pulled out was 90 points towards the rankings.  All that maters is getting through no matter by what means just now.

Tsonga was on fire on serve as much a Murray was on Wednesday.  Murray was ahead on first serve points won though. Taking into consideration who each player was playing it's difficult to decide who had the better performance.  Probably the worst match Djokovic has played in a very long time.

@Apollo - I got the feeling on Wednesday that Andy was playing with a renewed sense of purpose after his recent training in Miami, so I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll see a repeat performance, or at least one approaching it, against Tsonga.  Could be a close match though.

Jo Wilfred has said that playing Andy is a nightmare, so Andy continue to be his nemesis today. I will continue to do my 2 set win for Andy.

I've given JWT a set as he played well against Nole -though Nole really wasn't there.  I wonder if his fans have given him the kind of drubbing on his website that Andy gets here after such a performance?
I'm not so worried about Andy's lack of match practice now given how he played in his first match, which could have been tricky, and what he has said about his physical training.  Also I'm sure he'll have tried to play a set in place of the match.  Hope that's not famous last words on my part  Whistle
I'm glad they're on first so we don't have to hang around.
Anyway go out there and remind JWT of why you're such a nightmare to play  cmon yeah

I've gone for Andy in 2, he's got a good record against Tsonga.
According to ATP site Andy has H2H, 9 - 1. Last encounterwasn Miami where Andy won comfortably in 2 sets.

Could be a toughie this with Jo-W hitting best form, but can also be Angiebabez "Piece o'cake".  Hope its a good match. Always sorry to see Jo-W lose though, as I like him a lot, entertaining guy, but I wish he was more consistent.

very happy for him not to be consistent today lashurst!  Though like you I like him and it's good to see him playing better again after a poor phase.

Andy in two, and I don't mean any disrespect to Jo with that. Jo and Andy get on, but Jo admits he hates playing him.

Andy pasted Jo last time. Jo was having a really rough patch and barely turned up. That other one at the start of the year was an exho, so isn't included in the official records.

Jo can be dangerous when he's on song. I'm sort of expecting a tight first set, but I don't think Jo will be able to stay consist enough to beat Andy. Andy just needs to come out and play very well.

I still can't get over how truly awful Djokovic was yesterday. I don't think I've seen him quite as bad as that for a long time.
