He was never in with a chance of winning this match (IMO) so I am not disappointed.
Me neither.  He showed signs of picking up.  He played some good stuff, and it was on clay, which is not his best surface.  Much better than seeing him losing earlier, I feel.  Smile

“I’m disappointed to lose, but I was happy with the way I hit the ball,” said Murray, who failed to convert all three of his break points.

“I didn’t make enough returns and his serve had a very high percentage,” Murray added. “That was a big disappointment that I wasn’t able to convert more break-point opportunities—that’s usually the best part of my game.”

Murray has never won more than one match on a visit to Rome. Peter Bodo @ Tennis.com .

in this interview Andy seems very rational, self-conscious about his game and focused on his strategies...i really hope Corretja can help him to make concrete what Andy has in his head...

OK. So we’ve got two threads on the same subject again, so I’m going to repeat myself.

Tsonga lost 6-4 6-1, so Andy would have beaten him, statistically.

And if he'd beaten Ferrer as he nearly did then he would be in the semi's.

And Djokovic is out too, and Fed went in the 1st so ..... how does Andy compare?

And if Ferrer gets in the final or wins it then, ........   Andy NEARLY beat him!!!  So.......

And Andy predicted quite correctly that he improves by practicing harder, as he is now going to do for ANOTHER week .....   so ....

Let’s get the facts right here !!   Things ARE looking UP !!!

Soon will be, I'm recording it, as I do everything. Gulbis is going through a good patch. It won't necessarily last.

Andy has ways of beating anybody on a good day.

Can't agree with that one I was so enthusiastic when he bounced onto the scene 2-3 years ago, and then he just faded away.  I think he's the real deal now.  His touch tonight against Lopez has been great.

Will be shocked if he becomes a rival. Will be a lively outsider for the majorty of Murray's career but he really shouldn't be that much of a pest.

You think he's a future long term top 5 player?

There are numerous examples littered throughout the top 30 of attacking players who are notoriously inconsistent and don't have the base line consistencty to really challenge the top players most of the time. He may win the odd MS or two, may even win a GS if he's hot in the right draw given that the next era is never going to be as watertight as the 23 consecutive slam semi Federer era, but he's not going to be someone worth panicking over at the end of the day.

Don't think Cilic is that great either, he's assumed to be good from what the 3 players within 15 months of his age have done recently when he isn't really that good. Del Potro isn't really the type but he's got the game that when he's fit he'll be top tier where as Cilic seems like he'll play a similar role to what Davydenko did in in the past era though he won't be as marginalised.

I think if he (Gulbis) puts his mind to it he could definitely be a top 5 player.  He's very talented.
