Shanghai QF: Murray vs Stepanek
« on: October 11, 2012, 01:34 PM »
To be played on Friday 12th October at around 9am BST (4pm local time). However if the previous match (Tsonga vs Berdych) is a long one it could be later.
This will be the first time these have met since the Monte Carlo 2nd round last year (where Murray won 1&4). Stepanek is on a bit of a comeback this week, having fallen to #41 in the rankings, reaching his first Masters quarter-final since Paris in 2009 (where he recorded his only victory over Murray incidentally, winning 1-6, 6-3, 6-4). The Czech likes to serve and volley and can be a tricky customer when his serve is firing. Murray will be hoping to nullify this as much as possible whilst looking after his own service games and managing a minor cold.
Stepanek beat Hewitt (7-5, 6-1), Gasquet (6-4, 6-4) and Isner (6-4, 6-7, 6-3) to get to this stage. Murray had two byes after Mayer withdrew before beating Dolgopolov (6-2, 6-2).

Stepanek is dreamy.
These two seem to favour 6-1's and 6-4's.

I am glad Andy was able to avoid another big server Isner. Andy could use some easy rounds, really though I admit, stepanek is no pushover but still.

Stepanek is really irritating but Andy usually manages to sort him out ok. Hope he manages it again even if he's not feeling too well. It should be a more interesting game than had it been Isner.

Truthfully this is as easy a match as you'll get in the QFs of a Masters (apart from Ebden last year perhaps). Andy should beat him in Straights; a defeat would be unforgiveable. The guy's nearly 34 ffs.

Is it the sexy lips then? I mean MH did no justice to those lips in that H2H. I really thought it would be something else. ha ha

I saw Stepanek's last two matche and must say he was relly on fire. He is a brilliant net-player and when Andy 's passing shot do not work, Stepanek can be dangerous. Said it in the Dolgo thread: Stepanek dismissed Andy in Paris three years ago just when I had tickets for the next round. So bad memories of Stepanek. Now to something completely different. Fed has finally won after he struggled so much in the first two sets. Would have made my day to see him out again so early. It was not meant to be.

Andy was made to play till about 2am the night before.
I remember this match too, the organisers apologised to Andy publicly about it as it was clearly the reason he lost.
Andy was all over Stepanek until he got tired. MH is right, if he can't beat Stepanek in straights then
perhaps its best he got a little rest before Paris.
It should be easy enough I think.

When it comes to Andy, previous matches’ results don't really count because Andy's mentality vary from year to year, tournament to tournament, match to match. I take what we have right now - not what had in the past.

Hi All,
Is it weird that I'm a bit scared of Stepanek? I don't mean in terms of Andy playing him, but in terms of me! There's something about him that gives me the creeps! I might have to find a cushion to hide behind when I'm watching lol.
As long as Andy is physically all right I think he'll be fine tomorrow. I'm working on the assumption lately that he wins until he doesn't. I know, really scientific that
Oh, if Stepanek could restrain himself from throwing his arms in the air and telling great fibs about it tomorrow, I would be most grateful. I've never seen such a blatant fib in all my life
.
By the way, no one doing a match report today?

Disagree. Some players have a certain knack of causing Andy problems, others rolling over. Sure, ultimately the H2H means nothing, but it does give a general idea how the other guy usually fares against Andy (the likes of Wawrinka, Raonic, Baghdatis seem to play some of their best stuff, others like Lacko or Dolgopolov never really seem to play well, Simon too) and can be interesting to look at or reminisce.
