Should Murray look for a new coach?
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:59 AM »
It's been suggested a few times now since Murray's loss at the US Open. Thought it would be good to do a poll and find out any suggestions for a new coach, the poll question is not referring to the rest of his team.
Here's an article that looks at the idea of changing his coach:
Time for Murray to resolve strategy and coaching issues

He didn't listen to Brad Gilbert, so why would he listen to anyone else? If he's going to solve the passive-monkey problem, he'll have to solve it on his own.

Maybe at the time of Gilbert and Petchey he thought his main issue was just fitness, now he is super fit and still failing at Slam level, one would hope he would start to realise his tactics are a problem.
It's my belief that if Murray had stayed with Gilbert, he would have won a Slam by now. There would have been sacrifices though, he wouldn't have had such a enjoyable time on tour with his mates/team around him but maybe that sacrifice is worth taking until a Slam victory is achieved.

I thought Daren Cahill had been in the list of the favourites when Brad Gilbert was chosen - my understanding was that Cahill had declined, as did Stefanki. So, it may be more to do with who will work with Murray rather than who he would like to have ??

Cahill declined? I only read that Stefanki did because he was disappointed that Murray didn't ring him personally to make the proposal.

Standard procedure.

If Andy playes aggressive he will win Slam with Miles
but
on the other hand
let's see 2010 season and without slam again he should think about new coach
I think Magnus Norman or Larry Stefanki would be perfect to Andy!

It does seem a bit kneejerk and I've been guilty of it since the loss last week, but how does he move forward from here? As you've said elsewhere, I agree that he needs to make the mental adjustments to his game of his own accord, no matter what Miles may be saying, but is Miles tough enough to hammer these things into him?

Eh-up Safina needs all the help she can get, MN better not go running off and Murray's spent long trying to remove the Safina mentally unstable element from his game (I do like her though)

This really isn't kneejerk at all, this sort of decision will always come after a Grand Slam loss which unfortunately makes it look kneejerk but it's actually very rationale. Fun and games need to put on hold for a while and a fierce strong chracter and top coach needs to be brought in, he fired Gilbert, biggest mistake of his career? But there are still others out there. The problem is, now he's fired Gilbert, will any of them want to take the plunge?

Good article Mark. Yes, I believe Andy needs to change his strategy. Andy needs to want it enough to do it. Whether it is with a new coach or with Miles I don't think it is that important although having a new coach does help.
As a matter of fact, after watching Andy playing against Poland recently, it reconfirmed my lack of hope in him. If he carries on playing like he is, he will definitely capitalises on the weaker players to make mistakes to give him the ATP and MS titles but the GS will be out of reach.
The real problem is that Andy does not have a plan B to increase his level of agression whilst maintaining his consistency for 10 to 15 minutes to break an opponent to win a set. Maybe Andy should practise playing more agressively against opponents in the normal tournaments when he is a set up, with the accepted risk of losing more matches to fine tune his game. Or maybe Andy should practise playing more attacking tennis when he is receiving serve in a match ???

Murray is carrying a wrist injury. With that in mind, I'm not reading anything into the US Open and the DC tie.

Absolutely no. Look at the progress Miles did,he is the best that could happen to Andy and still sorry for the word, but idiot says yes. One lost match and yeah blame the coach, fire him. It definitely was not a mistake of Miles. I bow to that dude who has actually made Andy somebody.
