Yes, in the light of the latest news - to get that back problem sorted asap.
Unfortunately for him and us, I feel it means taking time off from tennis.

This is my fear too Aileen. Andy's post match interview brought to light the fact that it is an ongoing thing. It may just be muscular in which case resting and 'gentle' exercise may be the answer -- not five gruelling sets on a clay court!

Me too.   My expectations have plummeted now I know that Andy has a back problem which dates from December.  I hope he's doing plenty of pilates, which is really good for backs, and getting good treatment. At present it feels like the best outcome would be for Andy to get fully fit and hold his own in the top 4 and anything else would be icing on the cake.  Not feeling too optimistic about this year right now.

Maybe too hard, he relies on his witts more than most on the court. If he overtrains it may sap his mental energies too. i feel he must have reached a level of fitness required to go all the way in a slam. is he not considered as such by those in the know?
Lendl had to work super hard to make up for being less naturally talented, Murray has his problems but not enough natural talent is certainly not one of them.
Andy needs to transform his game into a slam winning initiative based approach and that will be done by court practise more than in the gym or on the track.

While this may be right, Andy himself says that doing the hard physical work gives him confidence.  I guess it's a difficult question of balance as he certainly came up short earlier in his career because he lacked sufficient physical fitness.

He needs to be a bit more confident then rather than manically hitting the gym and wearing himself out, but at the same time you have to be seriously fit to be on court with the likes Nadal and Djokovic. So there is a balance for sure.
I just think that he should gain confidence on court more because he is so talented on it with a wider skill set than Rafa and Novak.
He's more like Federer than these two ball bashers when all is said and done.
It might help him feel more comfortable against lower ranked players at the start of tournaments.

I agree tcbm but in the modern game the skill does need to be underpinned with the fitness.  But it would be sad indeed if in chasing the latter he lost some of the former and even if sadder if it led to his early exit from the game because of injury and burn out.

Stay at world number 4,  keep on winning the odd 1000  MS and 500 tournaments here and there  and keep on making GS semis.  Thats about it really.  maybe a medal at the Olympics. just maybe

He should not be playing at all until his back injury is better. Rather he not play tennis with an injury he might not be able to play again.

Andy is obsessed with fitness and hard work, like it's the solution to everything in tennis, mainly winning a Slam. He doesn't know the meaning of the word 'holiday' because he says he gets bored doing nothing.  Well, there are holidays and there are holidays, and if he looks around there are those that don't involve lying on a beach all day and boozing all night, which isn't his scene anyway.  After Wimbledon would be ideal because  fortunately the Olympics' tennis doesn't start until 28 July, so Andy could still have a couple of weeks' holiday and have time to train and practise before then.  If he did that it would be of enormous benefit to him for the remainder of the season.  In fact it would be of even greater benefit if he skipped RG and had a proper holiday a.s.a.p.   Andy missing RG wouldn't bother me.   Andy missing Wimbledon and possibly the Olympics would.

I would love Andy to forget the clay court season for this year after all he can come back next year.  If he rested and played Queens that would give him enough time to properly rest and come back for the grass and hard court seasons, fitter and fresher than the other players also it maybe enough to give him the hunger for tennis that imo he is losing over the past few weeks.

I'm sure he would get his hunger back Iris.  You know the saying "All work and no play makes Jack and dull boy" - well that's happening to him.  When I was working I enjoyed my job but I could never have got through the year without having my holidays.

Someone posted the other day (can't find the relevant post but something along the lines of `overtraining' creating physical problems' and I have often thought this might be the case.  Difficult to criticise however as he is surrounded by `experts'.....or is it his choice.  

I do worry that he thinks he's running out of time - far too early to say that but Andy probably thinks so.

PS.  Just seen Aileen's post saying much the same thing.  Yes, rest, rest...or have a break away.
