Will Andy be BBC Sports Personality this Year?
« on: July 11, 2012, 08:08 PM »
Skybet currently have Andy as 3rd favourite. Being the 1st male Briton in 74 years to reach the Wimbledon final probably wont be enough.
I guess since its an Olympic year there can be no certainties yet but I think winning the US Open will guarantee it.
Or winning the Olympics AND the year end Masters would also probably be enough IMO.
Bradley Wiggins 6/4
Jessica Ennis 11/4
Andy Murray 8/1
Mo Farah 9/1
Ben Ainslie 20/1
Rebecca Adlington 20/1
Alistair Brownlee 25/1
Laura Trott 25/1
Lewis Hamilton 25/1
Paula Radcliffe 25/1
Tom Daley 25/1
Dai Greene 28/1
Rory McIlroy 28/1
Sir Chris Hoy 28/1
Fabrice Muamba 33/1
Victoria Pendleton 33/1
Beth Tweddle 40/1
Lee Westwood 40/1
Luke Donald 40/1
Mark Cavendish 40/1
Phillips Idowu 40/1
Amir Khan 50/1
Chris Froome 50/1
David Beckham 50/1
Jenson Button 50/1
Stephen Hendry 50/1
Phil Taylor 66/1
Laura Robson 100/1
Steven Gerrard 100/1
Wayne Rooney 100/1

I know I'm paranoid. But am I paranoid enough?

No way will this happen this year too much competition from the Olympics. He will need to win at least one slam before he will get close.

Well I think he deserves to win it to be honest. Tennis is a really really tough competitive sport.. and its f**king hard win a major in this era. Some People though are unaware of this and think its easy to a major. *facepalm* He Reached the Wimbledon final. That's amazing. Incredible. I doubt people will vote for him because people will focus more on the Olympics. They won't include tennis in it as much. probably focus more on the athletics. But if Andy gets something at the Olympics and wins US Open he is in with a shout !!

If he somehow won the US open he might get it though, but definately not based on Wimbledon alone, because its Olympic year too much competition.

Come off it. He'd be 100% guaranteed to win it if he wins the US Open. No British man has won a Slam since Fred Perry. There are regular British winners in most athletic events, the Tour de France, the golf majors etc. Andy is a nailed on certainty if he wins the US Open.

An Olympian will win it (or Wiggins), regardless of what happens between now and the end of the year.
You have to remember it's effectively a popularity contest and as the general population aren't that fussed about tennis I can't see him ever winning it (regardless of how deserving he is) unless he as Djokovic-esque year, winning a couple of Slams end ending #1.
Wiggins or an Olympian will be winning it this year. Andy won't even make the top 3.

For Andy to win SPY he will have to win gold at the Olympics AND USO slam.
No sweat, then!

Yes, but Cavendish won it last year so I cannot see bikers getting two in a row.
Andy will need to get a medal then he may stand a chance.

Isn't the Sports Personality of the Year voted for by public vote? I seem to remember it is.
To be honest I think he is in with a shout. First man to get to a Wimbledon final in 74 years, but not only that, the match had HUGE viewing figures. 17million people do not normally watch tennis in this country, but they, or rather, we, did for that match. People tend to vote for what they remember, and that was a memorable match.
Sure, there is a lot going on this year, what with the Olympics, etc, but Andy could do it. A good performance at the Olympics might help (no pressure though Andy, you just do your thing) and if he was to win the US Open (I picked him for this year 12 months ago, so he can blame me if he doesn't) as well (be still my beating heart!) he'd be a dead cert! I, on the other hand, would just be dead! The excitement would undoubtedly kill me!

I'd like to be impartial, but I can't!

Hope Andy does it, might be a difficult year as you all say with Olympics, but a medal as well as first man for 74 yrs, could do it the public are very strange.

If I remember correctly, he came higher in the vote last year than on previous occasions and I think the same will happen this year, but I don't think he'll win.

yes he did and I was surprised I have to say. I think it's v unlikely he'll win in olympics year unless he wins a medal and/or USO but even then competition will probably be stiff. Would be nice to see him in top three though,
